FOOD SERVICE WORKER Definition Under supervision, prepares and serves food in a cafeteria, serving kitchen or central kitchen; maintains food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition; performs related duties as required. Essential Duties 1. Assist in the preparation of main dishes, vegetables, salads, fruits, sandwiches, and beverages. 2. Assist in baking of breads, cookies, cakes, pastries and other desserts. 3. Set up utensils and equipment for lunches. 4. Serve a wide variety of lunches and snacks to students, faculty and others. 5. May assist with the collection of moneys received from the sale of school lunches, snacks and other food stuffs. 6. Clean and store dishes, utensils, cafeteria equipment and food supplies. 7. Clean work areas and dispose of refuse. 8. May assist with wrapping, packing and loading of food for transport to satellite serving kitchen. 9. May assist in taking inventory. 10. May supervise student helpers. 11. Operate mixer, grinder, dishwasher and other equipment common to large kitchens. 12. Perform other duties as requested. License Required Valid California Drivers License (Some positions in this class may require the use of a car during working hours.) Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: sanitation principles applicable to food service and kitchen maintenance; basic math applicable to measurement and money handling; basic methods of preparing sandwiches, salads, desserts and related food items. Ability to: add and make change correctly and quickly; maintain good grooming and personal hygiene; prepare simple foods such as hot and cold sandwiches; learn to operate a variety of large quantity kitchen equipment; follow written and oral instructions; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work. Education High School Diploma or equivalent License: Valid California Driver’s License PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and repeat the same hand, arm, finger motion many times, as in operating a cash register or cutting food items etc. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as milk crates, frozen foods, canned food, push fully loaded food carts, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception and peripheral vision and color vision. Employees may also be required to have skin contact with detergents, abrasives and cleaning solvents and disinfectants.
