Job Description / Essential Elements:    Print   
GROUNDSMAN Definition Under general supervision, to operate power driven equipment as a major assignment; to perform basic grounds maintenance work and manual labor as necessary; and to perform other work as required. Essential Duties 1. Operate power driven equipment such as tractors, power lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, and similar equipment; 2. Use tractor attachments as the job demands; 3. Operate auxiliary mechanical equipment on the vehicles; 4. Drive light truck or jeep or transport equipment; 5. Load and unload materials and equipment; 6. Make minor adjustments and emergency field repairs to equipment; 7. Wash, clean, oil, grease, and service equipment; advise supervisor of operating condition; 8. Report need for mechanical adjustment and repair; 9. Perform heavy and semi-skilled grounds maintenance and labor work; 10. Cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize, and irrigate flowers, trees and shrubs; 11. Hoe weeds, rake leaves, sweep walks, and pick up debris as required; 12. Spread poison for weeds and insects; 13. Use hand tools to work soil; 14. Load truck with trimmings and trash and assist in hauling to dump; and 15. May assist in the preparation, maintenance and lining of baseball diamonds, football fields, tracks and other athletic fields. Qualifications Knowledge of: 1. Operation, use and routine maintenance of power driven grounds equipment; 2. Basic methods, supplies, and tools used in cultivating and caring for landscaped areas. Ability to: 1. Operate power driven grounds equipment safely and efficiently; 2. Service and make minor adjustments to equipment, and to detect needed mechanical work; 3. Perform general grounds maintenance work; 4. Use hand and power tools; and 5. Work without immediate supervision in the field, reliably and dependably; 6. Quickly learn schedules, procedures and tools used in grounds keeping work; 7. Work well with those contacted in the course of the work and be willing to cooperate with faculty and other workers. Experience: Six months in grounds maintenance involving the operation of power driven equipment. License: Minimum: A valid California Class A Driver’s License. Education: High school diploma or equivalent. The employee is required to be able to hear conversations in quiet and noisy environment. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and occasionally very loud.
