TITLE: MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELOR

CLASSIFICATION: Teacher Salary Schedule

REPORTS TO: Site Administrator

DEFINITION:

The identification and intervention of children’s emotional, social and academic needs is essential to removing barriers to their success. Middle school counselors help to set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. The middle school years serve as a foundation to future growth, development and achievement. Utilizing the knowledge, training and guidance of school counselors will allow teachers to identify at risk students and intervene in the mental health needs of their students. 

JOB CHARACTERISTICS:

Middle school counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. Middle school counselors work collaboratively with all staff and provide proactive leadership that engages all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to help students achieve success.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide developmentally appropriate individual and small group counseling services

  • Provide direct instruction to students utilizing social and emotional learning (SEL) programs

  • Facilitate and coordinate student team communication and intervention planning.  Case manage 504 Plans and schedule and facilitate SST/RTI/504 meetings

  • Develop and/or deliver classroom lessons related to social and emotional learning topics 

  • Participate in the development of effective programs that promote safe and effective learning environments (i.e. PBIS, bullying prevention) and are welcoming of students of diverse backgrounds

  • Provide student and staff support in the area of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging

  • Provide consultation on behavioral concerns and classroom management

  • Participate in District social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum development

  • Provide teacher training on social/emotional topics

  • Provide teacher consultation regarding student’s social/emotional needs

  • Provide education and guidance related to SEL programs to teachers and parents 

  • Provide parent education trainings related to SEL and mental health topics and consultation for individual student needs

  • Collaborate with school psychologists, instructional support teachers, special education teachers, general education teachers, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists

  • Provide administration, teachers and parents with referral resources including crisis intervention/grief services and consult with outside agencies and private service providers as needed

  • Serve as a member of a crisis management team to address the mental health of students when necessary; death, illness, community or school trauma

  • Offer guidance to responsible certificated staff or administrators when addressing child abuse recognition and reporting

  • Participates in site intervention meetings

  • Works collaboratively with site administration in supporting learners

  • Other duties as assigned

ABILITY TO: 

  • Work independently and in small groups with middle school aged children 

  • Understand and deliver social and emotional learning opportunities to groups of students

  • Strengthen our school community culture where differences, abilities and beliefs are respected and celebrated

  • Intervene on an individual or small group basis to support student wellness and mental health; understand and respond to social/emotional or behavioral challenges for an individual or group of students

  • Work effectively with educators in a school setting; manage time effectively and maintain a rigorous calendar and schedule.

EXPERIENCE: 

Minimum of three (3) years experience in a school counseling or social work setting, including child development and psychology, 6-8  educational settings, social and emotional learning, culture of inclusion, behavioral expectations and management, curriculum development and delivery, special education processes. 

EDUCATION:

Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling

Master's Degree preferred



PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Office/School Site Environment

Sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time.

Light to moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds).

Reaching, stooping, pulling, pushing, bending, walking, writing on blackboard, and keyboarding. Speech, hearing and vision emphasized.
