JOB DESCRIPTION 

 

TITLE: TEACHER 

 

BASIC FUNCTION: 

 

Under the direction of site administration, teaches courses as assigned which may include on campus classes, independent study courses, synchronous live classes or a combination thereof. An Excelsior teacher effectively participates as a team member and carries out the duties listed below in order to inspire and equip students to develop and master essential academic and success skills (Initiative, Responsibility, Communication, Social Etiquette and Teamwork). 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

 

  • Demonstrates commitment to Excelsior’s Vision, Mission, and Basics (Values, Beliefs, Parameters and Meeting Guidelines). 

  • Consistently and professionally communicate and correspond with parents, administrators, teachers, counselors and other professionals to ensure student success in a timely manner.  

  • Respond to student and parent concerns and requests immediately and effectively. 

  • Be on duty at all times while at school to help maintain a safe learning environment. 

  •   Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities and extracurricular activities such as field trips, club advisory, dances, etc. 

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide a productive  

classroom environment. 

  • Teaches content and skills in subject matter to students, utilizing course of study  

adopted by the Board of Directors and other appropriate learning activities. 

  • Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education 

activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. 

  • Adapts Excelsior’s common curriculum and assessments to ensure demonstration of mastery as defined by grade level standards. 

  • Administers or monitors group tests. 

  • Utilize and interpret a variety of formative and summative assessment results to monitor student progress, differentiate instruction, and reteach as needed in order to improve individual student performance and meet district wide academic goals. 

  •  Consistently teaches engaging, high-quality, rigorous lessons to meet the needs of the whole child.  

  • Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas. 

  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the  

needs of each student. 

  • May plan and coordinate the work of student support specialists and teacher aides.  

  • Provide opportunities for students to experience success and create a climate of high expectation for all students. 

  • Evaluates each students progress in subject area and prepares progress reports, report cards and other relevant student information. 

  • Develop, maintain and communicate clear expectations for student coursework, classroom expectations, and teacher availability for students and parents outside of instructional time.  

  • Develop, schedule and hold student and parent conferences to re-engage students not participating or completing work according to board policies and the independent study agreement.  

  • Identifies student needs and collaborates with other professional staff members to provide resources and supports for the whole child.   

  • Participates and collaborates in special population student meetings, and student intervention meetings.  

  • Participates in site based and district level collaboration meetings which may include curriculum, professional learning communities, etc. 

  • Performs basic daily attendance accounting and clerical services as required to include weekly grading and feedback. 

  • Enforce school rules, legal regulations, board policies, school and District policies and procedures, etc. 

  • Assumes responsibility for instructional materials, equipment, and supplies. 

  • Assist with other such duties as may be assigned. 

 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

 

  • Laws, rules and regulations related to Charter Schools, including applicable sections of the State Education Code and applicable laws.  

  • Excelsior Board policies, Excelsior employee handbook, Excelsior student handbook, Standard operating procedures (SOP), and campus catalogs.  

  • Professional teaching standards.  

 

 

ABILITY TO: 

 

  • Be an active listener with positive, professional interactions to maintain effective relationships with all educational partners.

  • Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree 

  • Valid California Teaching Credential and EL Authorization  

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

 

  • School campus environment as well as office environment 

  • Teachers will be assigned a combination of duties according to the needs of Excelsior which may include but are not limited to, Teaching independent study students, monitoring students in on-line courses, teaching on-campus workshops, labs and/or study halls and developing and/or revising curriculum. 

  • General working hours are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm however, in order to meet the needs of students and parents, and to complete all required essential duties, irregular or extended work hours may be required. 

  • Requires moderate lifting, 15-50 pounds. 

  • Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. 

  • Position requires moderate lifting of 15-50 pounds with the ability to bend at the waist, kneel, stoop, squat, reach and crouch. 

  • Grasp and handle motions and torso rotations on a continuous basis and the ability to reach in all directions including overhead and horizontally. 

  • Move hands and fingers to operate equipment, a computer keyboard and manipulate paper. 

  • Hear and speak to make presentations and to exchange information in person, online, and/or on the telephone. 

  • See to read a variety of materials, to prepare documents and reports. 

  • May require travel to various locations.
