OLD ADOBE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION MECHANIC/MAINTENANCE DEFINITION: Under general direction of the Director of Facilities and Transportation, performs journeyman-level mechanic work, including gas and diesel-powered engines, as well as natural gas engines; also performs a wide variety of skilled maintenance and repair of school buildings, facilities and equipment as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Mechanic/Maintenance classification is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series in that incumbent works under general direction and must be able to perform assigned duties at the journeyman level of training and experience. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: •Repairs and maintains gas and diesel-powered engines including major overhaul, as well as regular preventive maintenance and repair; •Performs any combination of the duties described for Maintenance Workers I, II, or III, or Groundskeeper/Maintenance Worker; •Performs a variety of skilled maintenance work in the building trades; •Performs body work and paints district vehicles; •Maintains tools and equipment in clean, operational and orderly manner; •Performs other related work as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of: •Diesel and gasoline major overhaul and preventive maintenance and repair; •Applicable code requirements; •Vehicle safety, including pupil transportation; •If assigned to building maintenance, must have knowledge of standard practices of one or more of the building trades including materials, tools, and procedures. Ability to: •Use and care for diesel and gas engine tools; Lift a minimum of 75 pounds using correct body mechanics; •Work from plans and specifications; •Follow oral and written instructions; •Work on own initiative; •Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties. •Maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. •Learn and follow the practices, rules, and regulations of the District and the school to which assigned. •Maintain the confidentiality of school related information. EDUCATION: •Graduation from twelfth grade or equivalent. EXPERIENCE: •Three (3) years experience in gas and diesel vehicle maintenance, including major overhaul, preventive maintenance and repair; •Building and grounds maintenance experience; •Some supervisory experience desirable. LICENSE REQUIRED: •Possession of a current and valid California Driver’s License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. •Possession of California School Bus Special Certificate or shall obtain a valid certificate within twelve (12) months of date of hire. •Must have a safe driving record. TOOLS: Possession of appropriate mechanics tools is desirable. OTHER: •Post Offer/Pre-Placement Physical examination is required prior to hire. Physical demands are available for review upon request. SUPERVISORY COORDINATING RESPONSIBILITY: Any or all of the Maintenance, Operations and/or Transportation classes, as assigned by the Director. RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Facilities and Transportation.
