HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Position Description

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

 

Under the direction of the Superintendent, the High School  Principal provides leadership to students, staff and  manages the school site operations in accordance with district policies, administrative rules, practices and all applicable laws.  The Principal serves as the instructional leader of the high school, providing leadership and direction in curriculum, evaluation and professional development. The Principal maintains high standards of student achievement and conduct within a positive learning environment.  The Principal leads staff in advancing district goals and achieving objectives. The Principal manages school budgets and provides school site fiscal leadership.  The Principal supervises and evaluates all certificated and classified personnel. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. As the site instructional leader, provides leadership in curriculum, evaluation and professional development; maintains practices that assists and mentors new teachers;
  2. Maintains high standards for student achievement, conduct and responsible citizenship within a positive and safe learning environment;.
  3. Monitors various programs for compliance with established practices, policies, procedures and  applicable law;
  4. Disseminates pertinent information regularly to the Superintendent, Board, Administration, Staff, Parents, Students and community;
  5. Supervises and coordinates the development and updating of policies, procedures, handbooks effecting students, staff and the high school programs; 
  6. Develops and manages the school budgets and provides school site fiscal leadership;  oversees the fiscal operations of the school;
  7. Oversees the supervision and evaluation of site level certificated and classified staff, including site administrators; oversees personnel related activities, practices and discipline consistent with applicable law, district policies and collective bargaining agreements; assists in the selection and recommendation to hire the best qualified candidates for school site employment;
  8. Coordinates and directs committees such as, School Site Council, English Language Advisory, Migrant Advisory and Title I Advisory, department chairs, and others, as needed;
  9. Continuously evaluates the instructional program, and together with staff develops courses of study, selects textbooks, and develops sound instructional programs; 
  10. Supervises, manages and directs student centered counseling services, including academic and vocational guidance,  post secondary academic and career planning;     
  11. Develops and supervises high school co-curricular and extra curricular programs and acts as the high school representative at CIF and athletic league meetings; ensures that all activities are properly planned and supervised;   
  12. Manages, supervises and  assumes responsibility for the use and maintenance of school site facilities by school staff, and students  in accordance with district policies and practices including equipment, furniture,  books, office supplies,  instructional supplies,     

13.  Represents the high school in the community to support and attain district goals; establishes and maintains a positive public relations with the community and communicates the high schools programs and objectives; 

14.  Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent;

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to:

  1. Possess skills to lead and manage all facets of the high school operation and programs, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including preparing and delivering oral presentations,  analyze situations accurately and fairly and adopt an effective course of action;
  2. Knowledge of  interpretation and application of  federal, state, local law, and as well as, district policies, regulations and procedures; collective bargaining agreements; fiscal responsibility, budget development and control;
  3. Ability to provide direction to others and make independent judgments;
  4. Plan and organize work; train, supervise, direct and evaluate staff
  5. Ability to meet deadlines, maintain accurate records and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships; ability to project professional, tactful, responsible behavior in all situations;   
  6. Masters of Arts Degree Required
  7. Valid credential authorizing services as a school administrator

EXPERIENCE:  

  1. Minimum of five years of  secondary teaching experience, preferred;
  2. Minimum of three years of administrative experience, preferred; 
  3. Valid California Drivers License

           

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Environment: 

Work is performed primarily in an indoor office/classroom environment and from time to time in an outdoor environment moving on even and uneven terrain; subject to driving to off-site locations to conduct work; supervision responsibilities include day and evening outdoor environments. 

 

Physical Abilities: 

  1. Position requires ability to walk, bend, stoop, reach and perform repetitive hand and finger motions.
  2. 2.     Work assignments are normally located in an office environment requiring light physical exertion and force. 

3.   Lifting 25 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing over 15lbs.
