JOB SUMMARY:

Under general direction of the Custodial Supervisor, within a broad framework of standard procedures and policies, perform routine cleaning and custodial services; maintain the general cleanliness of the school; set up rooms for meetings and clean up afterwards; provide site security where necessary.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Participates in the cleaning and custodial functions at the school site; ensures that all sidewalks, corridors and parking areas are swept; windows are washed; floors are stripped and waxed as needed; restrooms are mopped, scrubbed and disinfected daily; drinking fountains are cleaned daily; picks up papers and debris; rakes and sweeps appropriate areas; washes walls, cleans chalkboards; moves and arranges furniture and equipment in classrooms and office and meeting rooms; vacuums rugs and carpets; replaces light bulbs and tubes; changes heater filters; makes minor repairs as needed; sets up rooms for meetings and special activities, including night educational and civic meetings and athletic events; raises and lowers flags; locks and unlocks doors, gates and windows; maintains watering and irrigation schedule as required; assists with summer maintenance work with direction from the Supervisor of Maintenance and Custodial Services; reports any damage to building and grounds to principal; requests cleaning and custodial supplies and equipment as needed, responds to emergencies and performs special custodial work at the request of staff; works with student helpers at the school site; communicates frequently with staff and community; attends safety workshops and other training programs as requested; performs other related duties as required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of experience and training which would indicate possession of the
knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.

Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent. Some experience in custodial work preferred.

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment; safe use and
operation of equipment and chemicals used in custodial work; safe working methods and
procedures; care and maintenance of custodial and building equipment and tools.

ABILITIES:

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; use common everyday
cleaning equipment; perform manual work associated with cleaning duties; interact with
administrators for set up of facilities; interact positively with students, staff and visitors to
the school site; work independently; meet the physical requirements necessary to safely
and effectively perform required duties; establish and maintain cooperative relationships
with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Heavy physical effort which may include extensive standing or walking; with or without assistance, frequent lifting or moving of heavy parcels, machines or equipment weighing 50 or more pounds; frequent activities requiring full body exertion. Exposure to outdoor work in weather extremes.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

A valid Class C California Driver’s License and appropriate insurance may be required in addition to a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate
