COOK I Definition Under general supervision, performs skilled, large quantity cooking in the preparation of main dishes and other foods in a school cafeteria; assists in maintaining food service facilities in a sanitary and orderly condition; performs related duties as required. Essential Duties 1. Cook and prepare entrees, side dishes, and other foods. 2. Assist Manager or Cook II with forecasting the quantity of meals. 3. Check recipes and estimate quantities of food and supplies needed. 4. Modify ingredients in recipes to produce a specified quantity of food. 5. Clean and store cafeteria equipment and food supplies and work areas. 6. Help with point of sales. 7. Assist in serving line with set-up, serving and monitoring. 8. Assist and instruct helpers or new personnel in methods and procedures of tasks assigned. 9. Assist in catering and general kitchen duties. 10. Assist with preparation and service of snack bar. 11. Set up and substitute in manager's absence when needed. 12. Assist with receiving and checking inventory.. 13. Assist with wrapping, packing and loading of food for transport to satellite serving kitchens. 14. Operate mixer, grinder, slicer, ovens and other equipment common to a production kitchen. 15. Perform other duties as assigned. Desirable Certificates Individuals with appropriate certification from the California School Food Service Association may be given preferential treatment in the competitive employment process for this classification. Appropriate certification will include courses in orientation to school food service, sanitation and safety, and work improvement. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of methods of preparing, cooking and serving foods in large quantities; kitchen sanitation and safety precautions; operation, cleaning and caring for utensils and equipment; basic math and weights and measures. Ability to follow the recipe and nutritional guideline; skillfully prepare and cook meat and vegetables in large quantities; plan and organize food preparation to meet fixed schedules; operate a variety of appliances used in cooking foods in large quantities; add; cashier and make change quickly and accurately; understand and carry out oral and written directions; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work. Experience: One year of full-time experience in the cooking and serving of food stuffs in a cafeteria or restaurant or two years at or equivalent to the level of Food Service Worker in the Kings Canyon Unified School District. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Coursework in meal planning, nutrition, sanitation, cafeteria management, dietetics, or related areas License: Valid California Drivers License. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.           Work hours are 7:00 AM - 1:15 PM, 1/2-hour lunch. Position is 182 days per year. Prior food service experience preferred. If selected for an interview, must pass KCUSD Food Service Test.
