Chancellor Position Profile

The Board of Trustees of the Coast Community College District invites applications and nominations for the position of Chancellor to replace Dr. John Weispfenning who will be retiring after 30 years in education and over 6 years of service and leadership with the Coast Community College District.

 

The Chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of the District and reports to a 5-member Board of Trustees who are elected by the diverse residents of our communities.  The Board seeks an individual with a record of proven leadership who demonstrates a well-developed understanding and sensitivity to the diverse students, staff, and community that is served, ensuring academic excellence and student success.  A leader who will be visible in the District and the community, who fosters and supports an environment of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), who is prepared for the post-pandemic educational environment and beyond, and who inspires confidence and trust throughout the District.

 

Opportunities and Challenges

The next Chancellor of the Coast Community College District will be a thoughtful leader who will provide vision and inspiration through inclusion of faculty, students, staff, and administrators of Coastline, Golden West, and Orange Coast Colleges, and the District to effectively plan and address the following opportunities and challenges:

• Provide leadership to a large and complex multi-college district committed to student success by providing quality instructional programs and support services while serving an increasingly diverse population and the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts of the District and College.

• Provide leadership in promoting student access and success through innovative online, distance learning and other emerging modalities for providing instruction and student services. 

• Find the optimum balance between the autonomy of each college and the District to strengthen services to students, foster innovation, and support institutional excellence.

• Provide leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive District Master Plan.  

• Strengthen ties with local communities, businesses and industries, colleges and universities, K-12 districts, and other entities.

• Continue the District-wide process to ensure resources and sound budget practices that support student learning and pursue institutional excellence and improvement.

• Identify new sources of revenues and funding; determine the capital and facility needs of the District; and manage funds and projects, including bond initiatives.

• Anticipate, advocate, and strategically prepare the District for new state and federal legislation related to funding and the adjustment to California Community Colleges' mission.

Minimum Qualifications: 

• A Master’s Degree from an accredited institution and one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment. 

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

 

Desirable Qualifications: 

• An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning;

• A minimum of at least three (3) years of senior executive level experience in higher education;

• Teaching and/or faculty experience at an accredited institution of higher learning;

• Dedication to principles of academic freedom;

• A leadership role in a successful college accreditation process;

• Active involvement and leadership in community and professional organizations at the local, state and national levels;

• Demonstrated resilience and adaptability through challenges to support organizational sustainability post pandemic and beyond.

 

Conditions of Employment

Pay Philosophy: Movement to the next step placement is contingent on receiving a satisfactory performance evaluation AND a recommendation by the Board of Trustees.

 

This is a contract, full-time, 12-month, Executive Level position. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Flexible schedule and weekends might be necessary to address the needs of programs and job duties.  The District also provides an annual mileage stipend of $4,800 for this executive level position. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.  (Salary Schedule:  LL-3)

• Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
