PRIMARY FUNCTION

• Implement the District Academic Advisement and Assessment Program, under the immediate supervision of the site administrator, or designee.

MAJOR TASKS

• Advise students, parents, and staff through individual or group advisement sessions, in order to improve school, home, and classroom communication and facilitate the academic progress of students.

• Assist students in developing self-understanding and realistic expectations by coordinating a comprehensive assessment program that includes group achievement, interest and aptitude tests, and individual measurements for students with special needs.

• Analyze and interpret a variety of data (multiple academic measures, behavioral, personal, etc.) in order to assist in the development of an appropriate educational program and placement for students.

• Monitor the academic achievement of students as it relates to the promotion and retention policies of the district.

• Monitor social and emotional behavior of students and make appropriate intervention when needed to improve student achievement. Review attendance records and identify problem patterns for possible Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) action.

• Assist parents and students in identifying outside agencies that address special needs.

• Coordinate and review student records such as the cumulative file, progress reports, report card, proficiency records, and achievement testing results. Meet as needed with students and/or parent to review academic progress and planning.

• Coordinate and supervise school-level transitions for students and parents through junior high, high school, continuation high school, college, and career. Coordinate the work experience program and career planning.

• Create a plan for student recognition related to academic achievement for all students resulting in an overall improvement of schoolwide academic accomplishment.

• Support and participate in grant writing and administration to enhance the educational programming throughout the school.

• Develop and implement a schoolwide academic assessment program that provides multiple measures of student achievement.

• Provide classroom instruction as assigned.

• Perform related duties as required.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

• Knowledge of: Child development and counseling theory and techniques, curriculum concepts, legal requirements for education, vocational and educational opportunities for youth and community agencies serving youth.

• Skill to: Work competently with students, parents, staff, and community and to use interpersonal communication skills effectively.

EXPERIENCE

• At least three (3) years of successful teaching experience, and/or three (3) years of successful school academic advisement experience.

EDUCATION/CREDENTIALS

• Minimum of a master’s degree. Graduate work should include successful
practicum experience, personality and learning theory, and testing and measurement.

• Must hold a current California teaching credential and maintain the teaching credential as a condition of employment as an academic advisor.

DUTY DAYS AND HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT

• 202 eight-hour work days, as established by the site administrator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED OR RECEIVED

• Under the immediate direction of the site administrator or designee.
