Primary Function:
Under the direction of the SELPA Director or designee, the Speech and Language teacher provides on-going remedial services to pupils with communicative disorders, including language, speech, and hearing handicaps. Provides consultive services to classroom teachers and other school personnel regarding language disordered children.

SELPA Director
Major Responsibilities:
- Diagnoses language, speech, and hearing problems of referred students.
- Conducts Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings at least annually for all enrolled students.
- Develops materials and plans and conducts remediation for language, speech, and hearing handicapped students who are enrolled.
- Maintains records and reports for all students in the program.
- Serves as a team member in diagnostic assessment, evaluation, and placement of children with communicative disorders.
- Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, psychologists, and other personnel regarding students with language, speech, and hearing problems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Participates in departmental staff meetings, both business and in-service.
- Keeps state attendance register as required.
- Completes End of the Year status list to summarize year’s actions.
- Keeps informed of recent research for personal professional growth, and participates in professional organizations.
Qualifications:
- Certificated by the State of California or under waiver for certification in Speech, Language and Hearing.
- Possession of a University degree in Speech Pathology or equivalent.
- Familiarity with assessment procedures and tools in the field of Speech Pathology.
- Familiarity with therapy techniques and materials in the field of Speech Pathology.
- Knowledge of the California Education Code.
- Knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other applicable federal laws.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, parents and community.
- Ability to speak and write effectively in English.
