DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING (DHH) TEACHER

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

DEFINITION:

Under the Coordinator of Special Education, the primary responsibility of the DHH teacher is to provide an educational program to meet the needs of aurally disabled students and provide them with a program in instruction to promote cognitive, academic, communication and language, behavioral and social, and physical development skill.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement individualized educational programs with measurable goals and objectives with parents and IEP team members.
  • Provides instruction in the areas of pre-academics/academic, language, self-help, pre-vocational, motor and socialization skills.
  • Provides instruction for the acquisition receptive and expressive oral and written language.
  • Creates, adapts and applies learning methods and materials to meet the needs of the students.
  • Develops and implements individual and group behavior management plans.
  • Utilizes assessment material from a variety of sources and conducts ongoing evaluation of student performance.
  • Employs amplification aids to make maximum use of residual hearing for auditory training; daily assessment of amplification equipment.
  • Participates in open, consistent communication with parents of students regarding assessment, parent education, social interactions, and referral.
  • Facilitates development of speech and speech reading skills.
  • Organizes classroom environment.  Trains and gives direction to paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
  • Articulates with agencies providing services to students in the program.
  • Participates in sharing of learning approaches and plans with staff and administration for the development and improvement of the curriculum program.
  • Promotes applicable learning participation, challenging individual needs and requirements, for general quality education based upon programmed objectives.
  • Modifies and teaches the core curriculum at the appropriate level of learning for students.
  • Communicates with regular classroom teachers concerning subject matter content, student achievement, classroom acoustics, amplification, accommodations and modifications.
  • Assists students with physical care as appropriate.
  • Plans and implements appropriate integration experiences for students in the program.
  • Performs related work as required

 Knowledge of:

  • Subject area, current instructional methodologies, techniques and assistive technologies associated with the deaf or hard of hearing student.
  • Knowledge of deaf culture.
  • Assessment procedures for the deaf and hard of hearing from birth to age 22

 Ability to:

  • Teach students of a wide variety of levels and age ranges.
  • Work effectively with parents, community and education colleagues in and outside of the program.
  • Function as a positive, contributing member of an educational team.

 Education/Training/Required Certification:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid California Credential
  • Valid California Driver’s License
