JOB DESCRIPTION: CERTIFICATED TEACHER

Please note that specific programs and subject areas will require varied duties, responsibilities, qualifications, physical abilities, and other certifications than those listed. This description is offered strictly as a generic guideline to the basic duties of a classroom teacher.

TITLE: CERTIFICATED TEACHER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Teaches one or more classes of designated subject to students in grades 9-12 and assists in other school programs as assigned. The classroom teacher plans, organizes and implements an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic and personal potential. Establishes effective positive and professional relationships with pupils, parents/guardians, and with other staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Engaging and Supporting all Students in Learning:

Connecting students' prior knowledge, life experience, and interests with learning goals

Using a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students' diverse needs

Facilitating learning experiences that promote autonomy, interaction, and choice

Engaging students in problem solving, critical thinking, and other activities that make subject matter meaningful

Promoting self-directed, reflective learning for all students

 

Creating & Maintaining Effective Environments for Student Learning:

  • Creating a physical environment that engages all students

  • Establishing a climate that promotes fairness and respect

  • Establishing and maintaining standards for student behavior

  • Planning and implementing classroom procedures and routines that support student learning

  • Using instructional time effectively

Understanding & Organizing Subject Matter for Student Learning:

  • Demonstrating knowledge of subject matter content and student development

    • Organizing curriculum to support student understanding of subject matter

    • Interrelating ideas and information within and across subject matter areas

    • Developing student understanding through instructional strategies that are appropriate to the subject matter

    • Using materials, resources, and technologies to make subject matter accessible to students


    Planning Instruction & Designing Learning Experiences for All Students:

    • Drawing on and valuing students' backgrounds, interests, and developmental learning needs

    • Establishing and articulating goals for student learning

    • Developing and sequencing instructional activities and materials for student learning

    • Designing short-term and long-term plans to foster student learning

    • Modifying instructional plans to adjust for student needs

    Assessing Student Learning:

    • Establishing and communicating learning goals for all students

    • Collecting and using multiple sources of information to assess student learning

    • Involving and guiding all students in assessing their own learning

    • Using the results of assessments to guide instruction

    • Communicating with students, families, and other audiences about student progress

    Developing as a Professional Educator:

    • Reflecting on teaching practice and planning professional development

    • Establishing professional goals and pursuing opportunities to grow professionally

    • Working with colleagues to improve professional practice

    Experience and Education Required:

    Credential: Single Subject in area of specialization.

    CLAD or EL certification

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree with major or minor in designated subject, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.

    • Master’s Degree preferred

    • Completion of teacher’s preparation program and student teaching.

    • Prior job related classroom or student teaching experience in the subject area and in a high school setting highly desirable.

    • Bilingual English/Spanish skills desirable.

    Ability to:

    • Work independently with little direction

    • Maintain professional and positive relationships with students, colleagues, administration and district personnel

    • Operate a computer and job related equipment

    • Read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures

    • Maintain current knowledge of applicable curriculum and school instruction related regulations

    • Establish and maintain a variety of accurate record keeping and filing systems

    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

    • Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance

    Physical:

    Activities vary and are not always predictable as classes, student populations and individual student needs may change during the course of the school year. The amount of time for each activity varies depending upon daily workload and priority schedules. The position’s duties can vary from day to day and moment to moment. A professional may be up and down from teacher desk area, student desks, front of classroom, and classroom tables to meet with and assist individual students and groups of students. Some days, sitting could occur more frequently, and on other days, extended periods of standing and walking could be necessary throughout the workday. The professional must be able to physically respond to possible emergency situations. Individuals must be able to perform the identified physical requirements with or without accommodations.

    Ability to:

    • Lift, carry, push, and pull 10 pounds for the purpose or, among other things, transporting instructional and/or presentation materials

    • Ability to observe students for safety and to respond to student emergencies in the classroom and other settings

    • Bend at the waist, kneel, crouch, and reach for the purpose of, among other things, assisting students and to retrieve and store materials

    • Walk and stand for extended periods of time

    • Sit in order to work at desks or tables

    • Limb Coordination:

      • Pushing and pulling

      • Fine and gross manipulation

      • Simple and power grasping

      • Reach above, at, and below the shoulder


    OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Identifies student needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Communicates with parents and school counselors on the individual student’s progress; participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level. Shares in the sponsorship of student activities and participates in faculty committees on a voluntary basis.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED OR RECEIVED: Supervises, plans, and coordinates the work of aides, classified personnel, assistants, and other paraprofessionals and receives supervision pursuant to the evaluation proceedings.

    Supervisor: Site Administrator

    Work Year: 183 days per year

    Salary: Certificated Salary Schedule, based on units and years of experience

    Overtime Status: Exempt
