Brief description of the position
Certificated/Classified/Non-Certificated. Under the supervision of the Principal with
direction from the Athletic Director, serve as the coach of the varsity sport and assume
responsibility for the total program at all levels for the sport. Report to the principal
through the Athletic Director.
Major Duties and responsibilities
o Assume the responsibility to run a comprehensive varsity sports program.
o Assume fiscal responsibility. Maintain and organize all fundraising for the
sports program; follow ASB accounting procedures for all deposits and
expenditures for sports program; provide status of account at all times.
o Provide direction for all levels of the sport in order to maintain continuity of
the program.
o Direct all assistant coaches assigned in the program.
o Communicate with the Athletic Director on day-to-day activities; i.e. practice
schedules, game schedules, bus transportation, discipline, and injuries.
o Communicate with teaching peers in order to monitor progress of studentathletes
and to intervene with academic progress when so requested by a
Teacher.
o Organize practice sessions that involve all student-athletes, make wise use of
time, and minimize exposure to injury.
o Organize game day activities so student-athletes are prepared to assume
Classroom responsibilities while preparing for athletic competition.
o Organize, with assistance from the Athletic Director, game activities in order
to provide for smooth transition from game to game.
o Provide and enforce rules and regulations of student-athlete expectations that
parallel school rules.
o Establish a clear and consistent means of communication to explain situations
to student-athletes and parents on such matters as playing time, consequences
for violation of rules, grounds to earn letters, and dismissal from a team.
Qualifications
o Knowledge of the technical and strategic aspects for the sport
o Experience as a high school level coach (appropriate sport)
o Must meet first aid and CPR certification
o Demonstrated ability with financial matters such as team records, receipts, and
other basic operations related to team finance.
o Ability to communicate with high school students, parents, peers,
administrators, community and the media
o Demonstrate knowledge of CIF and National Federation regulations that
govern the sport.
