FALLBROOK UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Interpreter/Tutor-Deaf & Hard of Hearing Definition: A classified person under the direction of the Coordinator of Special Education and site administrators; who provides a voice to sign and sign to voice support and/or assists students with daily living and behavioral skills, academic skills, advising students, teachers, administrators of activities and progress and maintain documentation about activities in progress. Example of Duties Include, but are not limited to: · Interprets and/or translates for students and adults for the purpose of providing communication between voice to sign and sign to voice. · Monitors under the direction of the teacher, individual students, classroom and/or campus activities for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. · Oversees testing under the direction of the teacher as appropriate for the purpose of supporting students in the completion of tests or written assignments. · Participates in various in-service activities for the purpose of improving one’s own skills/knowledge. · Performs basic clerical functions for the purpose of supporting the teacher. · Provides teachers with input for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students’ progress and/or students’ objectives. · Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well being of all students. · Uses adapted classroom work/homework/assessment instruments under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing voice to sign and sign to voice support and/or reinforcing classroom objectives. · Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge & Ability in the Following Areas: · Skills are required to perform multiple and highly complex technical tasks with a frequent need to upgrade skills in order to maintain an acceptable level of performance due to changing job conditions. · Knowledge is required to perform beginning algebra and/or geometry; create and/or compose documents; solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: · Ability to gather, collate, and/or classify data. Flexibility is required · Flexibility to frequently adapt to changing situations; adapt to changing processes in the analysis of data; and routinely adapt to changing processes in utilizing equipment. · Ability to work with a diversity of persons; use a variety of data; and utilize equipment of a similar type. · Interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relations using tact, patience and courtesy. · In working with other persons there is a significant amount of problem solving required to analyze issues, create a plan of action and reach solutions; with data it is significant; and with equipment is minimal. · Effective communication skills to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. · Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include an understanding of the district’s educational objectives. · Ability to work under limited supervision focusing on results; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons. Resources utilized to perform the job’s functions are significant in scope. · Some office practices and procedures including record keeping, and the ability to operate a variety of office equipment including a computer terminal. Education and Experience: Completion of formal American Sign Language Training. Registered Interpreter for the Deaf Certified. High School diploma required and some general college is desirable. Working Conditions: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; the upper extremity physical capabilities of reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally requires 10% sitting, 20% walking and 70% standing. The job is performed with minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and a clean atmosphere. Salary Range: 17 Part-time, 9.5 months per year

          Performs a variety of sign translating assignments for a certificated hearing impaired teacher; assists with the preparation of classroom and teaching materials; performs routine clerical duties; and does other related duties as assigned. The interpreter primarily assists with communication between the credentialed hearing impaired teacher and students, parents and staff through the use of American Sign Language (ASL)/Signed English.
