DEFINITION To provide the assistance necessary to implement the health program of the school district. May be responsible for daily and monthly student attendance and maintenance of student database. May assist with record keeping involving students supported by the School Improvement Program and the Title 1 Program while adhering to State and Federal regulations. SUPERVISION School principal provides general supervision. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES – Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to the following: • Organize, prepare, record, file and maintain information for student health records and files as directed. • Receive and care for students who have accidents, become ill or other problems relating to hygiene or care of the body. • Administer first aid. • Administer medication to students in strict compliance with doctor’s orders and district policy. (Has written doctor’s orders and signed permission slips on file for all medications to be administered to students; make parental contacts for necessary forms; makes schedules for administration of necessary medications.) • Maintain friendly parental attitude toward students to elicit their confidence and cooperation. • Check health information on newly enrolled students. • Contact parents regarding accidents or illness. • Assist in school health programs and tests. • Keep teacher advised as to students’ health or physical problems. • Attend in-service training sessions arranged by the District. • Provide data for reports and audits. • Fulfill procedures in health clerk handbook • Assist school secretary with immunization status of each student; notifies parents of status; if conditional, and procedures that must be taken. • Assist with exclusion notices by notifying parent by letter; maintain file of notices sent. • May be responsible for daily and monthly student attendance reports. • If assigned to K-5 school, maintain office phone and relieve secretary for morning break and 30 minute lunch break. • Maintain inventory of supplies, cleanliness in health office, first aid and field trip kits. • Assist with other office functions as designated by principal. • Assist principal in investigating concerns regarding welfare, health and safety for students. Job Description Page Two Health Clerk QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: • English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation and general math. • Modern school office methods, procedures, and equipment, and business letter writing. • Record keeping principles and procedures. • Computers Ability to: • Ability to use computer for data entry, word processing, Internet and e-mail communication. • Learn procedures and operating details of the school to which assigned. • Speak clearly and effectively. • Follow oral and written directions. • Develop and maintain rapport with students and staff. • Perform clerical work involving use of independent judgment. • Type accurately from clear copy at a speed of 45 net words per minute. Experience and Education: • Passing score on Aide Proficiency Test. • Red Cross Certificate, or completion of Certificate within 30 days. • Valid California drivers license.
