Position Description:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of orthopedically handicapped students in a classroom; care for physical needs of students, such as lifting, changing and feeding; prepare materials and tutor students.



Requirements:

Knowledge of:

Child guidance principles and practices.
Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.
Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.
Health and safety regulations.

Ability to: 

Learn the special needs, problems and requirements of special education students including students with physical disabilities.
Assist certificated staff with instruction and related activities of the assigned learning environment.
Assist students in developing self-help and social skills including eating, toileting, dressing and personal grooming.
Maintain confidentiality of pupil and school information.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.
Communicate effectively with students and adults.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Work confidentially with discretion.

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; and Associates Degree or higher; or complete 2 years of study at an institution of higher education (48 semester units); or participation in a rigorous paraprofessional training and assessment program.
