JOB SPECIFICATION DRIVER TRAINER THE POSITION Under general supervision, provides training and/or retraining for transportation vehicle drivers and prospective drivers; assists in the operation and maintenance of the Transportation Department; when necessary, drives a bus or transportation vehicle over an assigned route in the transport of students, including field trips, athletic and other similar student activities; and performs related work as required. RESPONSIBLE TO: Director - Transportation DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class receive general supervision from the Transportation Supervisor and provides instruction and training programs for bus drivers and/or transportation vehicle drivers in classroom and behind the wheel requirements required by law, culminating in the maintenance or acquisition of a School Bus Driver’s Certificate. Incumbents assist in maintaining the department’s operational level and provides input for the evaluation of all aspects of the Transportation Department. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: • Provides instruction for the training and retraining of all current and prospective drivers in the department. • Assists in maintaining the operational level of all aspects of the department. • Assists in routing, scheduling and dispatching of transportation for District needs. • Assists in handling of complaints and problems concerning transportation. • Drives a bus or transportation vehicle over a designated route in accordance with a time schedule. • Transports students, staff and chaperons on field trips, student activities and other special events. • Picks up and discharges students only at authorized stops. • Enforces District policies and procedures and maintains discipline on the bus or transportation vehicle. • Maintains vehicle cleanliness on a daily basis. • Performs minor vehicle maintenance checks and reports maintenance needs. • Services transportation vehicles, such as washing, fueling, checking oil and tires. • Prepares and submits daily and other reports as required. • Participates in District inservice programs as required. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE Knowledge of: • Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting students. • Training methods and materials for instruction on the operation of motor vehicles. • Safe driving practices. • Supervision and control of student passengers. Ability to: • Motivate, instruct and train/retrain transportation employees. • Operate a transportation vehicle safely, exercise good judgment and extreme caution, and handle any emergencies that may arise. • Assume responsibility for supervising and maintaining order among students. • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward students. • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. • Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public. • Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and school business.
