INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direct supervision, provide assistance to instructional personnel in serving the educational needs of students in a classroom environment; and perform related duties as required.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Monitor student activities, such as drill, practice, and research under the instructions of a teacher;
2. Mark, score, and average grades of written objective tests;
3. Assist the teacher in providing instructional materials to individuals or groups of students;
4. Take attendance; complete appropriate documents required from classroom activity;
5. Explain instructions and answer routine questions in the absence of the teacher;
6. Prepare teacher aids, such as charts, bulletins, and other presentations as directed by the teacher;
7. Monitor tests, study hall, and appropriate classroom situations;
8. Take, file, and deliver messages;
9. Operate office duplicating, audio-visual, reading lab equipment, etc.;
10. Type classroom and general materials in draft form, including examinations;
11. Collect, assemble, catalogue, and distribute materials; and
12. Operate a computer terminal and demonstrate the proper use of the computer for student use.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
1. Subject being taught preferred; and
2. Typing, filing, and general clerical skills.
ABILITY TO:
1. Learn school policies, and the methods, practices, and terminology used in instructional situations;
2. Spell and use proper grammar;
3. Follow verbal and written instructions;
4. Operate office duplicating and audio-visual equipment;
5. Type 30 words per minute;
6. Motivate and establish good relationships with students; and
7. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
EXPERIENCE/TRAINING/EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to:
1. Graduation from high school;
2. Pass the Proficiency Test or provide transcripts reflecting 48 or more units of college coursework.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment:
Classroom or office environment, subject to moderate noise, some distraction, and interruptions; requires meeting multiple demands from several people and interaction with staff, and students.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Seeing to monitor student behavior during classroom activities, hearing and speaking to provide assistance and information related to classroom assignments, dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer terminal, audio-visual and educational training equipment, bending at the waist, kneeling, and standing and walking for extended periods of time.
HAZARDS:
Extended viewing of computer monitor.
