San Diego Unified has 4 itinerant mild/moderate teacher positions. These positions are full-time and on a 10-month calendar. The Itinerant Special Education Teacher will report to the Special Education Director for Compliance in the Special Education Division. This teacher will support school sites across the district when vacancies occur by writing, coordinating and facilitating IEP meetings for schools to assist in maintaining compliance with state and federal timelines. This teacher may be supporting several schools at once and will need to drive to a variety of locations. San Diego Unified is offering a new hire incentive for all special education positions. If you are hired by the district between now and March 15, you are eligible for a $4,000 incentive.
Requirements / Qualifications
Qualified applicants must have or be qualified to obtain a valid California mild/moderate teaching credential. Applicant's credential must be attached to their application and registered with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing by the close of the posting. Applicants must have a valid California driver’s license and be prepared to conduct, participate in, and travel to sites, professional development sessions, workshops, and meetings.
The teacher will report to the central office and attend Special Education Divisional Meetings. Additionally, this teacher will work collaboratively with all members of the special education division and site based staff supporting Special Education operations to provide coaching and support related to Special Education compliance matters. The teacher may engage in developing and delivering professional development training in the areas of compliance and other IEP related topics, under the direction of the Director. Additionally, this teacher will support broader Special Education compliance matters such as whole site overdue IEP events. The itinerant teacher will participate in case management duties to support school sites, as they will be writing, coordinating and facilitating IEP meetings for compliance purposes, when schools are in need for upcoming IEPs that need support. They will not act as an administrative designee for IEPs. When schools have a vacancy, they will fill the vacancy with a visiting teacher to teach the classes. The candidate should have a willingness to drive to multiple sites, have flexibility in their work habits, enjoy writing robust, compliant and quality IEPs, have knowledge of coaching strategies and have a passion for supporting students receiving special education services. The candidate should demonstrate high organizational skills, be a relational team member that contributes to the positive work environment of the Special Education Division and demonstrate knowledge of Special Education procedures. The itinerant teacher will be a district steward who represents the district in a professional and positive way, as they will interact with multiple leaders, IEP teams and colleagues across the district.
