Instructional Aide - Special Education
DEFINITION:
To assist, supervise and care for students in the Special Education Program under the supervision of certificated Special Education Teacher; to provide assistance to Director of Special Education, School Psychologist, Speech and Language Specialist, and School Nurse in paraprofessional duties as assigned; to perform related duties as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AS DIRECTED BY THE TEACHER ASSIGNED:
· Assist special education teacher and other certificated personnel in academic instruction and preparation of instructional materials and vocational materials.
· May assist students individually or in small groups.
· May assist instruction in self-help skills and basic academics.
· Assist and tutor students in reading, math, science, and social studies.
· Assist students with remedial exercises and/or basic skills programs (Title I).
· Administer, score, and record tests and papers as directed by the teacher.
· Direct and physically assist physically handicapped students in performing activities such as moving about, using bathroom facilities, feminine hygiene, eating, etc. May be required to lift multi-handicapped students whose weight exceeds fifty (50) pounds.
· Under supervision of regular education teacher, assist students with individualized test administration.
· Utilize current vocational and career field information by working closely with Career Center.
· To transport students in the community for banking, shopping, DMV, medical appointments, and social security cards as directed by teacher.
· Under supervision of the regular teacher, provide special assistance to students with exceptional needs.
· Set up and operate audio-visual equipment and other teaching aids.
· Perform a variety of classroom related clerical services; answer phone, take messages, maintain state-mandated school records, file, provide computer data input, type letters as directed, handle attendance records, run duplicating equipment, assemble lesson material, procurement of supplies, preparation of charts, lists, labels, displays, bulletin boards.
· Assist in supervision of students during off-campus field trips.
· Assist teacher in creating and maintaining proper classroom environment.
· Attend professional growth seminars.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, instructional, administrative, clerical, and operations personnel.
· Perform other duties as instructed by the teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Equivalent of two years of college in field related to instructional area where needed; experience working with handicapped youth or special education students is helpful; ability to type. Must be able to pass student competency tests.

OVERTIME STATUS: Non-exempt.

EXPERIENCE: Experience working with handicapped youth or special education students is helpful. Ability to use a computer.
EDUCATION: Must meet Every Student Succeeds Act: Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; or holds an associate's (or higher) degree; or met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness).
