Job Summary

Join the Beacon School team and be a positive influence in the life of a young person today. Beacon School is a special education school with a therapeutic focus. We serve students in grades 6 through 12 at our campus in San Jose. We also provide contracted mental health and behavior support services within the Special Education departments of several public schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. The Behavior Coach position is a great opportunity for gaining experience in the special education field and exploring a career in teaching. Beacon School partners with Pacific Oaks University to offer a teacher residency program to our Behavior Coaches that provides financial assistance and paid student teaching at our San Jose campus under the direction and support of an experienced master teacher. Employees who successfully complete the residency program earn their teaching credential and master's degree in two years. The Behavior Coach position is a key member of our support team, working in consultation with classroom teachers and alongside mental health therapists to support students with a variety of disabling conditions (including emotional disturbance, learning disabilities, autism, or speech and language impairment). Duties include providing academic and behavioral support to students; collecting behavioral data; collaborating to create Behavioral Intervention Plans; and professionally communicating with parents and staff.

Requirements / Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have a BA/BS, preferably in Education, Psychology, Counseling, or a related field. Behavior Coaches must pass the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST) and obtain a substitute teaching permit within one academic year of employment. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates, teaching assistants or in-home support providers who are ready to grow and have been considering a career in special education or clinical mental health.
