          The District consists of two administrators, a Superintendent/High School Principal and a K-8 Elementary School Principal. THE SCHOOL Hayfork Elementary School is a K-8 comprehensive school with an enrollment of 218 students. The staff consists of 12 certificated and 20 classified employees. A School Readiness Program for children 0-5 years old is operating at the school site. An after school program is offered to all students at Hayfork Elementary School until 6:00 pm. THE COMMUNITY The District serves the small communities of Hayfork, Hyampom, Wildwood, and Forest Glenn. The elevation is 2300 feet and the climate provides four distinct seasons. Hayfork is the largest town of those served, and has a population of approximately 2,000. This is a well-known wilderness area; 75% of the land is National Forest. The area offers an abundance of hiking, camping, hunting, and water activities, making it a perfect location for an avid outdoor enthusiast. Hayfork has stores and shops that offer the essential goods and services. Weaverville, the county seat, is located 32 miles northeast of Hayfork and offers additional services. If you are looking for a shopping center, i.e., Macy’s, Target, Costco, etc., you must travel to Redding or Eureka. There are many clubs and organizations including the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Quilters Guild, and Hayfork Booster Club. Hayfork is the home of the Trinity County Fair. THE DISTRICT The Mountain Valley Unified School District is located in Trinity County in the northwest part of California. The district is located 105 miles inland from Eureka and is 63 miles west of Redding. The Mountain Valley Unified School District serves approximately 300 students from Kindergarten through Adult Education. The district is comprised of three sites: a K-8 elementary (Hayfork Elementary), a 9-12 necessary small high school (Hayfork High), and a continuation high school (Valley High), in addition to a small adult education program. The District covers 650 square miles and is the second largest school district in Trinity County. 80% of our students are on the free and/or reduced lunch program. The District’s ethnic breakdown is 57% White; 3.5% Native American Indian; 9% Hispanic; 20% Asian; and 10% two or more races. Homeless students total 14%, English Learners are 14% and Special Education is 10%. The current general budget is approximately $5.5 million. The District emphasizes a rigorous and relevant curriculum. The “standards-based education” focuses on defined expectations at each grade level in each subject area. The district staff is committed to pursuing excellence in education with a challenging curriculum for all students.
