BUS DRIVER DEFINITION: Under supervision of MOT Director or designee to operate a school bus over designated routes to transport school children; and such other duties as may be assigned if within the usual scope of this employment. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Drives a bus daily over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging school children. • Escorts children across streets, stopping traffic as necessary. • Transports children, teachers and adults on field trips to various locations sometimes choosing the best route and making departure and arrival time as scheduled. • Assists in maintaining the bus, inside and outside, in clean and safe operating condition. • Maintains student lists and checks bus passes. • Performs other such duties as assigned. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: • Safe driving practices. • Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children. • First aid and accident prevention. Ability to: • Drive school buses of all sizes, and other automotive equipment efficiently, with safety as primary consideration. • Maintain order among children on a school bus. • Follow oral and written directions. • Follow routes and schedules. • Detect mechanical defects. • Use courtesy and good judgment in answering questions from school personnel and parents. Bus Driver (cont) License: A California Class 3 driver's license and required certificates (medical certificate and first aid exam). A California special driving certificate. Experience: • Six months of experience as a school bus driver. • Experience waived in case of student bus drivers duly certified by the district superintendent. Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, and successful completion of the examination for school bus drivers administered by the California Highway Patrol.
