About the Employer

We are a unified school district serving more than 16,150 students in grades K -12. We have thirteen elementary schools, four middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, three specialized high schools, two alternative high schools and one K-8 school. We also offer a home schooling program, adult education courses and other unique programs to fit the needs of all students. Our school district employs approximately 1,100 certificated and nearly 900 classified employees. ANTIOCH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE:  BUS DRIVER INSTRUCTOR

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Manager-Transportation, provide training and instructional activities for District school bus drivers; drive a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Provide training and instructional activities for District school bus drivers; conduct individual and group training sessions to enhance and reinforce school bus driver skills; provide refresher courses to drivers as needed; drive a school bus to perform behind-the-wheel demonstrations.

Compile information and maintain and update various logs and records related to bus drivers, mileage, inspections, fuel, field trips, students, routes, certification and assigned activities.

Train and provide instruction to new bus drivers concerning the operation of school buses and related practices, techniques, standards, requirements, and procedures; assure bus driver understanding of safety practices, procedures, and regulations.

Utilize and train personnel concerning the operation of wheelchair lifts, tie-downs, straps, harnesses, car seats, retraining devices, seat belts and other equipment; operate standard office equipment including a copier, computer and assigned software.

Monitor school bus drivers during training activities and assess driving skills and progress; provide recommendations for resolving driver deficiencies.

Develop, maintain, and keep school bus drivers current concerning designated school bus routes.

Drive a school bus along designated routes; operate buses of varying sizes; pick up and discharge students in accordance with established timelines; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes, and regulations.

Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus in accordance with District policies related to disciplining students; report behavior issues to appropriate personnel; assure student understanding of bus rules.

Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect interior, exterior and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition; check brakes, lights, doors, engine, seatbelts, mirrors, safety devices and other equipment; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as needed.

Load and unload District students as required; assist students with boarding and exiting the bus; assure students are safely fastened into their seats.

Assist students with crossing streets as needed; escort students to and from houses, schools and other locations as needed.

Communicate with District personnel, parents and others to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; utilize a two-way radio.

Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition; clean windows, mirrors and bus interior and exterior; pick up and remove trash and debris; check and replenish fluid levels as needed.

Transport students and faculty on field trips, sports events or other special activities as assigned; meet scheduled departure and arrival times.

Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed.

Maintain current knowledge and advise bus drivers of applicable transportation laws, rules, regulations and related District policies and procedures.

Attend and conduct a variety of in-services.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  graduation from high school and three years school bus driving experience.

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

Valid California Class A or B commercial driver’s license with passenger, air brake and school bus endorsements.

Valid and appropriate California School Bus Driver Instructor’s Certificate.

Valid First Aid and CPR Certification issued by an authorized agency.

Maintain good driving record.

Valid Medical Card.

Valid California Special Driver certificate for school bus.
