Title:                   School Counselor

Reports To:        Site Principal or Designee

Work Year:        193 Days

Salary:               Certificated Salary Schedule

BASIC FUNCTION:

Include but are not limited to: assesses student programs, keeping the students informed of their status toward meeting graduation requirements; makes recommendations for improvement and counseling, as needed; assists pupils in defining long-range and short-range educational goals; insures that pupils receive information on graduation requirements, academic honors, college entrance requirements, and career training; provides information and assistance to pupils and parents relating to career choice, requirements for advanced education, and potential career opportunities; orients new students and parents to the school program and various guidance services available; consults with school personnel concerning special abilities or problems that the pupils may have; assists with campus control and supervision; refers pupils for individual testing; counsels with parents concerning pupil data and school progress; interprets group test data to pupils, parents, and teachers, including achievement and aptitude tests and interest surveys; assists administration with student interventions to help keep discipline problems from continuing; and performs other duties as may be assigned by immediate Supervisor within limits of the contract.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: Note, this list is illustrative only and is not intended to be a comprehensive list of tasks performed by this classification.

  • Provide counseling and mentoring for students struggling with social and emotional, attendance problems
  • Work with school personnel, parents, students and community agencies to provide support services to behaviors that interfere with school success
  • Reinforce executive functioning skills, such as but not limited to, communication and social skills, problem solving, anger management, self-regulation, optimism, and resilience
  • Enhance understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Respond to crises by providing direct services and coordination with appropriate community services
  • Coordinate positive behavior intervention supports
  • Assist students in understanding the relationship of academics to careers, life at home, and in the community
  • Design and implement interventions that support student success
  • Prepare presentations for student / parent information nights on topics such as career paths, college entrance paperwork, course selection, 4-year graduation plans
  • Track data regarding credits and credit recovery needs.
  • Analyze transcripts
  • Oversee the SST process
  • Coordinate placements for Special Education and English Language Learners
  • Oversee testing processes and information pertinent to college (e.g. PSAT, SAT, ACT, SBAC, etc.)
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MA/MS degree in School Counseling or related field
  • Valid California Pupil Personnel Services Credential in School Counseling
  • Experience with prevention, intervention, developmental, and crisis counseling
  • College, community, and social/youth agency partnerships
  • Use of data to inform decisions and drive continuous improvement
  • Experience using student information databases or software applications
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel to local school sites

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Counsels students with personal-social-academic needs; refers student to other professionals when appropriate Assists teachers with the solution of individual student behavior problems Consults with school personnel concerning special academic abilities and/or discipline problems that a student may have Serves on Student Study Team as school sites Interprets to students and parents – school rules, regulations and programs Interprets group test data to students, parents, and teachers, including achievement tests, aptitude tests and interest surveys Performs academic screening; refers students for individual testing, counsels with teachers and parents concerning student data and school progress Provides information and assistance to students and parents relating to life choices and fulfilling goals on IEP's. Orients new students and parents to school programs and the various guidance services available Establishes, maintains, and supports standard of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the school discipline standards approved by the School Board Assists in the development and implementation of alternative learning programs Serves as liaison between home and school Assists with the development of the master schedule Maintains counseling record of students Refers students and parents/guardians to appropriate agencies Attends faculty and district meetings, as necessary Interprets the district and school guidance program for staff Performs other duties as may be assigned
