Job Summary

The San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) Governing Board is seeking a forward-thinking leader to serve as the District’s next Superintendent. Located in north San Diego County, SMUSD serves 21,000 TK-12 students who are challenged, inspired, and poised to excel. The District’s boundaries encompass the City of San Marcos, parts of Eastern Carlsbad, and small portions of Escondido and Vista. Despite enrollment doubling in size since the mid-1990’s, SMUSD maintains a strong sense of caring and connectedness where family and community are valued and prioritized.

Successful candidates must possess the ability to: • Set a clear vision/direction for the organization • Create unity and cohesion among internal and external stakeholders • Build trust, transparency and stability • Address equity gaps that impact learning • Ensure the long-term fiscal health of the District • Collaborate effectively with employee associations • Think beyond educational boundaries to connect with the community • Work effectively with the Governing Board QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE • A seasoned educational leader with demonstrated success at the senior cabinet level • Working knowledge/foundation of instruction, business and human resource functions • An individual who can make a long-term commitment to the District • Principal experience preferred • Bilingual preferred
