BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual and/or small groups of students in a classroom and other learning environments.  

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Facilitate student learning with individuals and/or small groups in all Montessori curriculum areas.  Assist students in various subject areas such as reading and math; assure student understanding of classroom rules and procedures; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.

Read age-appropriate stories to students; assist in the development of student writing skills.

Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.  Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom and program activities such as preparing, duplicating, filing and laminating instructional materials.  Follow classrooms procedures and use the Positive Discipline philosophy as a classroom management tool.  Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, computer and assigned software.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF: Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Basic child guidance principles and practices. Safe practices in classroom activities. Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO: Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment. Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher. Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing and duplicating materials. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Observe health and safety regulations.  Maintain routine records. Use assigned software at an introductory level.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or the equivalent.

Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education (college level) OR

Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree

OR Met (pass) an assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching

reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT: Classroom environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching. Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

Fingerprint Clearance (once hired, fingerprinting will be done) 1-3 recent Letters of Recommendation Resume or application TB Screening (can be submitted once hired), Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, or weekly Covid-19 negative test (can be submitted once hired).
