DEFINITION
The Visually Impaired Specialist provides itinerant support for students with Visual Impairments; Direct instruction in the use of specialized materials (Braille, tactile representation, optical low vision aides, etc.) and by modification of curriculum as necessary; utilizes support equipment appropriate for level of visual impairment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
• Provides learning opportunities to reinforce the concepts taught in the classroom.
• Functional vision assessments.
• Evaluates materials for adaptation and coordination of adapted materials.
• Collaborates with orientation/mobility specialist, transcriber, special day teacher, and other staff as appropriate.
• Consults with staff/parents and other duties as required/assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
IEP procedures and goals and objectives development, assessment organization, planning, and program evaluation strategies; specialized educational interventions (format of materials, access methods, instructional modifications); techniques and procedures regarding curriculum and instruction design and delivery systems for both special education and district CORE curriculum; human relationships, conflict resolution strategies and procedures; and team building methods and techniques.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, and coordinate program for visually impaired students at all grade/age levels throughout the district; supervise in the development of strategies for curriculum modifications; develop and present training for teachers and instructional assistants; evaluate and analyze complex problems, issues, and concerns, and recommend appropriate alternative solutions; communicate effectively in oral and written form to a variety of audiences; establish and maintain cooperative organizational, public, and educational community relationships; comply with the District’s customer service standards, as outlined in Board Policy.
Course work in the field of visual impairment and remedial techniques in the basic skills subject area is desirable.
Education:
Current California teaching credential or license authorizing service for individuals with visual impairments. Bachelor’s degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
Experience:
Two years of successful classroom teaching experience with individuals with visual impairments is desirable before assignment to this position.

Current California teaching credential authorizing service for individuals with Visual Impairments.
