Tulare County Office of Education JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Outdoor Education Intern (5139) Job Summary: The job of Outdoor Education Intern is done for the purpose/s of gaining skills in all facets of residential outdoor education. This includes instructing students in outdoor science concepts; leading students in large group activities such as: singing, folk dancing, and games; training and supervising high school cabin leaders and overseeing student management for those cabin leaders; teaching in specialized facilities such as the museum of natural history, observatory, planetarium, and raptor center. Essential Functions: Instructs students for the purpose of learning outdoor science concepts. Directs students for the purpose of performing hands-on science and nature activities. Leads students for the purpose of hiking on nature trails. Directs large groups of students for the purpose of participating in activities such as folk dance and games. Trains high school students for the purpose of managing cabin groups of sixth grade students. Instructs large groups of students for the purpose of following dining procedures. Leads songs, tells stories, performs skits for the purpose of instructing and entertaining students. Plans events for the purpose of scheduling student activities. Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities: Skills to: • write clearly in a presentable fashion; • read complex materials; • communicate effectively with students in outdoor/wilderness settings. Knowledge of: • organizational and workplace practices; • electronic communication and Internet resources. Ability to: • speak, hear and understand spoken English; • walk in mountainous terrain both during the day and night; • speak clearly in loud audible levels. Responsibilities include: working under standardized instructions and/or routines; leading, guiding and/or coordinating other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is an opportunity to impact the Organization’s services. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking and 45% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere. Experience Required: Job Related Experience is desired. Some work or volunteer experience in working with children is preferred. Education Required: Targeted job related education that meets organization’s prerequisite requirements. College degree or some upper division college work is preferred. Licenses, Certificates, Clearances, Testing and/or Bonding Required: Department of Justice and FBI Fingerprint Response.
