HEAD CUSTODIAN

DEFINITION:
The Head Custodian, under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties in support
of classroom and administrative operations. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to
tasks required to maintain the cleanliness, good order, sanitary and secure condition of schools
and/or administrative spaces. Must be capable of working reliably and independently to carry
out assigned tasks and work schedules.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Cleans classrooms, offices, food serving areas and other facilities of an assigned
school or District site during an assigned shift; sweeps, scrubs, mops, waxes and
polishes floors and vacuums rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices and other work
areas.
• Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks,
toilets and urinals; fills dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items;
cleans mirrors, tile and windows.
• Keeps eating areas clean, washes tables, empties and washes trash cans daily.
• Picks up paper and other debris from grounds and buildings.
• Waters plants and cleans outside areas including grounds and planters.
• Adjusts and arranges furniture and equipment; sets up school facilities for special
events and meetings.
• Operates and maintains a variety of custodial equipment including a floor stripper,
buffer, carpet shampooer, vacuum cleaner, and small power and hand tools; replaces
belts and bags on vacuum cleaners as necessary.
• Participates in thorough cleaning and restoration of school offices.
• Assures security of school and/or offices during assigned hours; locks gates, doors
and windows; turns off lights when room is not in use; monitors facilities for hazards
and reports to appropriate personnel as required.
• Orders, receives, checks and distributes custodial supplies and equipment as needed;
maintains related inventory records.
• Performs related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
• Methods, materials and equipment used in performing custodial work.
• Cleaning materials, disinfectants and cleaning agents used in custodial work.
• Health regulations and safe working methods and procedures.
• Proper lifting techniques.
• District policies, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
• Operate a variety of custodial equipment including a floor stripper, buffer, carpet
shampooer, vacuum cleaner, and small power and hand tools.
• Meet schedules and time lines.
• Observe and report need for maintenance and repair.
• Complete minor repairs as necessary.
• Observe health and safety regulations.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Training/Required Certification:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Two years experience as a custodian.

The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This type of work may involve
carrying, lifting, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects, ascending and descending ladders,
stairs, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods. Working
conditions may include regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors, cleaning agents and chemicals.
Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may also occasionally
