JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:       Paraprofessional

Supervisor:          Site Administrator

 

Purpose Statement:  The job of "Paraprofessional" is done for the purpose(s) of assisting in the supervision and instruction of students, relieving teachers of routine clerical tasks, providing school site office management, custodial and food service related services.

 

Essential Student and/or Teacher Related Job Functions:

 

  • Monitors and supervises student behavior within a variety of school environments (e.g. classroom, gym, restrooms, playground, library, etc.) for the purposes of providing for the safety and welfare of the students.
  • Inspects and monitors students' outside play environment for the purpose of assuring the safety of students and assisting in the maintenance of outside play equipment.
  • Reports observations and incidents regarding student discipline, condition of outside play equipment and/or playground and facility safety issues for the purpose of ensuring a safe school campus.
  • Administers first aid to students for the purpose of providing first responder emergency care.
  • Assists school district nurse by conducting checks for head lice for the purpose of providing a lice free environment for students and staff.
  • Assists teachers and parents for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and/or developing students' daily living and behavioral skills.
  • Instructs and aids students with various computer technology applications for the purpose of complementing classroom instruction.
  • Supports lesson plans and student projects by developing teaching aids, charts, etc. for the purpose of enhancing the curriculum.
  • Instructs and aids students with various computer technology applications for the purpose of complementing classroom instruction.
  • Confers with teachers, parents and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of student's progress and/or implementing of student's and/or classroom objectives.

 

Essential Office Related Job Functions:

 

  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. student enrollment, copying, filing, ordering office supplies, etc.) for the purpose of managing school office related business.
  • Supports the site administrator for the purpose of assisting with his/her administrative functions.
  • Composes documents (e.g. correspondence, school memo, site specific school forms, purchase order requests, maintenance lists, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to school and district personnel, the public, state officials, etc.
  • Monitors and oversees student attendance for the purpose of meeting district and/or state attendance guidelines.
  • Responds to parent inquiries for the purpose of providing families with needed information about school programs, schedules, etc.
  • Processes in-coming packages of supplies for the school for the purpose of assuring that supplies are received as ordered.
  • Processes student records received and out-going for the purpose of documenting the transfer of student records and assuring their availability to the school teachers and/or administrator as may be needed.
  • Manages the distribution of in-coming mail for the purpose of disseminating information to school staff.
  • Reports to the site administrator and district office, as needed, for the purpose of assuring communication between the school site and administration.
  • Conducts school business related to students and personnel in a confidential capacity for the purpose of supporting the district administration.

 

 

Essential Custodial Related Job Functions:

  • Arranges furnishing and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities and events.
  • Prepares cleaning agents from concentrated form(s) for the purpose of minimizing waste.
  • Cleans school facilities, i.e. classrooms, office, restrooms, etc., for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Orders equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities.
  • Prepares documentation and informs supervisor for the purpose of preserving school grounds in a healthy, attractive and safe condition.
  • Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and liability and ensuring safety at the work.
  • Requests equipment and supplies for the purposes of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities.

 

Essential Food Service Related Job Functions:

 

  • Collects information for the purposes of assuring accurate meal transactions.
  • Estimates food preparation amounts for the purpose of meeting projected meal requirements and minimizing waste.
  • Procures equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining an adequate inventory to complete jobs efficiently within budget guidelines.
  • Inspects received items of food and/or supplies for the purpose of ensuring specifications, quantity and quality of orders and/or complying with mandated health requirements.
  • Stocks food, condiments and supplies for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities and security of items.
  • Prepares food, either prepared or from scratch, and beverage items for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional requirements and projected meal requirements.
  • Arranges furnishings and equipment prior to designated lunch times for the purpose of providing a clean and accessible area at which food may be served.
  • Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
  • Serves one or more food items for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.
  • Cleans utensils, equipment, and the storage, food preparation and serving areas for the purpose of maintaining sanitary conditions.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, staff and the public for the purpose of providing information and/or direction regarding the type and/or cost of meals.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

 

Job Requirements:

 

  • Experience Required:  Prior job related experience, paid or volunteer, with school age children. Prior job related experience in the clerical field is essential. Prior job related experience in food preparation, serving and basic kitchen activities is desirable.

 

Skills Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

 

  • Skills to perform clerical functions, perform arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, computer literate, minimum 50 wpm keyboarding, ability to read and comprehend numerous types of handwriting, use good judgment, use English in verbal and written form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling; Skills to perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate  and care for institutional kitchen equipment; perform calculations for the purpose of diluting cleaning agents, knowledge of use of cleaning agents, supplies and equipment
  • Knowledge of office protocol, office equipment, computers; knowledge of principals of child development, instructional processes; knowledge of modern methods of food preparation, health codes and sanitary principles; knowledge of methods of use of cleaning materials, equipment, supplies and safe work practices.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records and personnel issues, meet schedules and deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations; rapidly learn methods and materials used in institutional kitchens; adhere to safe work practices and work independently with minimal supervision.

 

  • Significant Physical Abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, balancing, stooping, reaching/handling/fingering, talking/hearing conversations and other sounds (potential hazards), visual acuity/depth perception/visual accommodation.
