Specialized Academic Instruction (SAI) Teacher

Description of Position:  Under the direction of the Administrator or Administrative Designee; assess, identify, and support preschool, elementary and/or middle school level students who require special education services to make educational progress.

Major duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and provide direct and indirect services within the student's educational setting, based on established Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and objectives; plan, develop, organize and assist in the operation of comprehensive individualized educational program for students who require special education services to make educational progress; act as the specialized instructional personnel responsible for students with disabilities by making appropriate adjustments to SAI services; perform other related functions as required. Support District in improving outcomes for students found eligible for special education services. Under Administrative supervision, provides expertise and assistance directly to general education teachers in instructional supports for the purpose of improving instruction for students with exceptional needs.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate students based on Student Success Team (SST) referral to determine eligibility for special education services.
  • Complete; initial evaluations, additional assessments, Triennial evaluations within district, state and federal guidelines, develop legally compliant assessment reports and Individualized Education Plans.
  • Utilize comprehensive assessments results to interpret data to determine student strengths and areas of need and develop appropriate IEP goals and objectives to accommodate the wide variety of individual needs of each student.
  • Participate as a Case Manager of the IEP team to develop IEP goals, objectives, adaptations, accommodations, modifications and instructional plans; implement and monitor the IEP, at least annually.
  • Assist with coordination of planning, development, and implementation of IEP.
  • Case Manager responsibilities include, but are not limited to;
          -  Coordination of IEPs
          -  Notification of all team members (i.e. meeting notice, written and electronic notification, etc.)
          -  Collect all original documents and immediately send to appropriate district facility
  • Maintain records and files to track, monitor, and manage student progress towards goals and documentation of service.
  • Provide IEP outline of the Individual Education Plan and/or Behavior Support Plan (BSP) of the incoming student to the general education teacher when received or after each IEP where goals and/or Behavior Support Plan changes.
  • Collaborate with General Education Teachers to ensure students with special needs are provided the least restrictive environment, per current IEP.
  • Consults and/or collaborates with gen. ed. Teachers on;
          -  any specialized circumstances and/or information concerning students’ behavioral need
          -  implementing positive behavior strategies for students with special needs (including behavior plans, per IEP team determination)
  • Address student individualized needs through Specialized Academic support.
  • Provide students with appropriate accommodations/modifications based on student needs as identified in IEP.
          -  Educational settings
          -  Classroom, District, and Statewide assessments
  • Serve as case manager; communicating and providing a progress report per grading period to parents regarding student progress on IEP goals.
  • Communicate with parents as necessary and provide a written progress report per grading period to parents regarding student progress on IEP goals.
  • Participates as requested in parent conferences.
  • Manage and maintain all Individual Education Plan (IEP) documentation (for each student) in a Special Education Information System.
  • Review goals and objectives and make recommendations for changes as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management and employ a variety of behavior management strategies and techniques, including behavior modification, reinforcement and other positive behavior shaping techniques.
  • Schedule and facilitate collaboration with Special Education aides
          -  Provide direction, materials, and support to Special Education aides assisting in SAI progress toward students’ goals and objectives.
          -  Confer as needed, concerning programs and materials to meet student needs, and/or behavioral support
  • Support the physical and health needs of students, as needed.
  • Assure compliance with established federal and state laws, regulations, procedures and district policies.
  • Maintain knowledge of instructional and technological advances and other matters concerning specialized education instruction and support.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, including all coursework needed to meet credential requirements

Certificates / Licenses:
Valid California credential authorizing service in the assignment

Other:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license and able to provide own transportation in conduct of work assignment, TB test clearance, and Fingerprint clearance.
