Job Description Summary

This position is 75% FTE and 9 months at the Paso Robles Campus. Hours are flexible and can accommodate day and evening shifts.

 

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Student Success Centers, located both on the San Luis Obispo and North County Campuses supports the promotion of academic skills, learning strategies, and practices necessary for academic success through free drop-in tutoring, embedded tutoring, writing assistance through the Writing Center, on-line tutoring via NetTutor, and student success workshops. Currently, both sites oversee over 100 tutors in 17 subject areas with a strong focus on basic skills, Math, Sciences, and ESL. The Centers implements a majority of Cuesta's equity- minded efforts and programs and strives to bring innovation and best practices to all our services.

 

Under supervision of Associate Director, Student Success Centers, this position will provide tutoring and assistance for students primarily in Mathematics and promote academic skills, learning strategies, and attitudes necessary for student success in all disciplines. Instructional aides are required to perform at a skilled level with a considerable degree of independence. Positions in this class are expected to work collaboratively with instructors to support and increase student success.

DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Student Success Centers, and in collaboration with faculty and student services personnel, provide tutoring assistance to students for a designated discipline; provides mentorship and work direction to student tutors and other student and hourly employees; and performs other related duties as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Instructional Aide is distinguished by the requirement to provide a variety of specialized learning/ academic support services to students in the Student Success Centers.

 

Duties may be standardized but require the exercise of independent judgment in interpretation and application of standard practices and procedures. Incumbents in this position must possess sufficiently developed skills to handle all but the most complex matters. Close supervision and specific instructions are not usually received, but unusual or difficult cases are referred to the supervisor. Employees in this class should be capable of assisting in the orientation and on-the-job training of other employees.

 

Incumbents in this position support student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness by performing a variety of tasks which requires the ability to assist in the academic instructor and students in their instructional environment while maintaining professionalism.

 

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

• Tutors and instructs individual students and small groups of peer-level students in a lab or classroom-type setting to develop and increase academic knowledge and skills;

• Introduces alternative or expanded information not presented in class to enhance student understanding;

• Assesses student's current knowledge, understanding, and experience to determine what presentation will inspire comprehension of the academic subject matter:

• Instructs students in the use of computers, including computer basics and access of educational software packages/applications;

• Reviews work with students, determines which concepts were misunderstood, and assigns additional work to help enhance understanding of course content;

• Tutors and instructs students in learning and test-taking strategies (e.g., flash cards, study guides, test-taking techniques, coping with stress, and otherwise alleviating test anxiety);

• Meet and work with the public, students, and college staff in a variety of situations which require tact, discretion, and courtesy;

• Promote Student Success Center services and College support programs to students and provide referrals as appropriate;

• Mentor and assist in training student tutors on tutor strategies and best practices for student learning within the Student Success Centers;

• Give information and interpretation of policies and procedures, which require knowledge of an assigned aspect of the departmental activities; and

• Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

 

• Associate's degree in field of expertise;

• Skills development and/or other relative experience sufficient to satisfy knowledge and abilities requirements.

 

Experience:

Required

 

• At least one year of general teaching/tutoring experience, including small group experience, skill development and/or other relative experience and knowledge of subject material.

 

Knowledge of:

 

• Subject matter of assigned area of learning;

• Instructional and tutorial techniques;

• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy;

• Safety practices;

• Ability to work with small groups and instructors.

• Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;

• Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and

• District policies and procedures.

 

Ability to:

 

• Instruct or tutor students effectively;

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

• Maintain confidentiality of personal matters;

• Learn and interpret rules, regulations, and instructions;

• Operate a variety of equipment related to the Student Success Center, including computers and software applications, website, calculators, and others;

• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and

• Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

 

Physical ability to:

 

• Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;

• Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;

• See for the purpose of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter;

• Hear and understand speech at normal levels;

• Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

• Speak so that others will be able to understand a normal in-person and telephone conversation;

• Work at a desk, conference table, or in meetings of various configurations;

• Sit or stand for extended periods of time;

• Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

 

License and Certificates (current within the last year or must be continuously current):

SALARY SCHEDULE

Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E.
