DEFINITION:

 

Under supervision and direction of the Director of Bond Projects, Facilities, and MOT, may act as supervisor of the operations, maintenance, and grounds and to perform related work as required; to act as coordinator between operational, grounds, and maintenance personnel and to coordinate resources/supplies for the operations, grounds, and maintenance department.

Positions in this class coordinate the work of several sites and supervise workers as required by the Director of Bond Projects, Facilities, and MOT.  The Assistant Director of Operations, Grounds, and Maintenance guides operational, grounds, and maintenance workers in the assigned projects. The Assistant Director of Operations, Grounds, and Maintenance makes assignments, sets priorities, and evaluates employees under his/her supervision and participates in the evaluation of central and site operations personnel.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Coordinates work assignments of custodian, grounds, and maintenance workers and other personnel as may be assigned. 
  • Confers with administrators in planning work projects.
  • May assist in the development of maintenance work order priorities through periodic conferences with site administrative personnel.
  • May assist in assigning workers as needed to complete work orders.
  • Guides, checks, evaluates, corrects, and reports on the work of assigned personnel in the maintenance, repair and alteration of District structures and equipment. This includes initiating, monitoring and closing work orders using the automated system.
  • Enforces safety standards and conducts safety meetings for assigned personnel.
  • Enforces cleaning standards for all custodians in the District.
  • Directs District survey with fire marshal.
  • Responds to after hour emergency alarm calls.
  • Inspects completed work and sees that it is performed in accordance with instructions and procedures.
  • May assist in maintaining logbook of training for District maintenance personnel in details of material safety data sheets for issued hazardous chemicals.
  • Assists in development and implementation of operations/maintenance budget.
  • Assists in development of annual report of maintenance performance for Director of Bonds & MOTS.
  • Maintains equipment inventories for all assigned personnel and maintenance facilities.
  • Conducts periodic staff meetings to confer upon District policy, staff development, and focus of maintenance goals, safety issues and solutions, logistics of workflow etc.
  • Coordinates site work with administrative staff.
  • Orders, inventories, tracks usage and budget for equipment
  • Assists in the development of maintenance solutions to site problems.
  • Trains assigned employees and evaluates their performance.
  • Prepares reports on work in progress.
  • Plans and lays out duties of assigned departments.
  • Keeps time, labor and material records.
  • Prepares cost estimates of work projects.
  • Keeps various logs and records.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Standard methods, materials and equipment used in the various trade areas.
  • Principles of supervision and training.
  • Shop mathematics applicable to the maintenance and building trades.
  • Complex record keeping.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures including care of hazardous materials.
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise assigned maintenance in all phases of assigned work.
  • Work from shop drawing, sketches, plans and specifications.
  • Prepare labor and material cost estimates of work projects.
  • Read and understand technical trade manuals, instructions and guides.
  • Maintain complex records and prepare detailed reports.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationship with those contacted in the course of work.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience at a journey-level maintenance and building trade and experience as a crew supervisor or experience at or equivalent to experience of a journey-level crafts worker.

 

  • Personal Characteristics: Demonstrate leadership and supervisory skills; ability to work effectively with staff and public; responsive to personnel needs.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Graduation from an accredited 2-year institution/college or trade school with a degree in business, engineering, or an applicable discipline.  Related experience may be substituted for education.
  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • An acceptable driving record and insurability by the District’s Insurance carrier.
  • Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance.
  • Evidence of current TB clearance.
