Custodian Job Description Range 9 Definition: Performs routine custodial work under general supervision. Duties and Responsibilities: • Vacuums and cleans classrooms, library and administrative area on a daily basis. Sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors; vacuums, spots and shampoos rugs and carpets on a scheduled basis. • Washes, cleans and dusts windows, mirrors, railings, walls, furniture, tables, benches, woodwork, desks, chairs and other furniture. • Erases and cleans chalkboards and white boards; vacuums chalk trays and erasers. • Cleans and polishes metal works such as door handles and hand railings. • Empties and cleans pencil sharpeners and containers for waste and other materials. • Takes waste and other materials to appropriate areas. • Washes, supplies and disinfects bathrooms. • Replaces light bulbs. • Reports damage to buildings, broken equipment and safety, sanitary and fire hazards. • Moves or rearranges desks, chairs, tables, furniture and other equipment; sets up and covers special events. • Locks and unlocks doors and gates; operates night-lights: checks doors and windows for security. • Picks up trash, clothing and other materials on the grounds and puts them in the appro¬priate places; sweeps walkways and entrances. • Assists in the ordering of custodial materials and supplies. Desirable Qualifications: Experience: One year of experience in custodial and janitorial work and knowledge of modern cleaning methods, the use and care of materials and equipment and safe work practices. Ability to: Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency, Perform heavy physical labor, Understand and carry out oral and written instructions, Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Education: Graduation from high school or its equivalent
