STANISLAUS COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION

CLASS TITLE:  SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under direction of an assigned administrator, provide service for students who have speech, language, and/or hearing handicaps.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Participate in identification, evaluation, admission, and placement of pupils as a member of the Individual Educational Plan Team.

Establish the extent and severity of speech, language, and hearing handicaps and make recommendations for enrollment to IEP Team.

Participate in the development of IEPs for pupils with speech, language and hearing deficits.

Implement the prescriptive programs and recommendations of the LSH specialist on the IEP team through the scheduling to individual and/or group therapy sessions. Report student progress through conferences with teachers, parents, and other school personnel.

Provide language, speech, and hearing therapy to pupils in regular and special class who meet criterion for service.

Refer pupils, when indicated, to nurses, psychologists, and others for further evaluations related to their speech, language, and hearing problems.

Maintain appropriate files and records on each student.

Confer with parents and professional staff members on student's progress.

Attend staff and in service meetings as required.

Interpret the communicatively handicapped program to school personnel and the community.

Provide in-service regarding language, speech, and hearing to regular and special education staff.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Child development
Physiological aspects of speech and hearing
State criteria for speech and hearing special education eligibility.

ABILITY TO:

Assess student to clarify strengths and deficits in speech and hearing
Communicate child's needs and program options in speech and hearing.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree.

EXPERIENCE:

Teaching experience that involves children in regular education as well as service in special education classes is desirable.

LICENSE AND OTHER REQUIRMENTS:

Valid California credential authorizing service as a speech and language pathologist.

Pass an employer paid pre-employment physical/drug screening.

Department of Justice clearance.

Employee must arrange their own transportation.  If using their own vehicle in the course of employment, must have proof of insurance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Seeing to read instructional materials, rules and policies and other printed matter.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations.
Walking over rough and uneven terrain, play yards and school grounds.
Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling light-medium objects.
Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.
