Santa Rosa City Schools SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSISTANT - SEVERELY HANDICAPPED BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the school principal, serves as an aide to certificated personnel in the supervision, care and instruction of severely handicapped students; of a multi-handicapped program and relieve the teacher, or other certificated supervisor, of clerical details. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Incumbents of this classification work with severely handicapped students and are required to supervise students without certificated assistance during the teacher’s preparation and lunch period and is responsible for students when accompanying them on learning projects off campus. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: 1. Assists teachers in conducting lessons and other classroom activities. 2. Works with students in small groups, or on a one-to-one basis to reinforce basic skills or to supplement classroom work. 3. Prepares for, and assists with, various classroom projects. 4. Operate audio-visual equipment. 5. Assists in the preparation of graphic and written teaching materials. 6. Prepares and maintains records involving student progress. 7. Assists in ordering and caring for classroom equipment and supplies. 8. Confers, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the needs of students. 9. Administers and grades various types of tests. 10. Performs a wide variety of clerical and typing duties. 11. Under direction of certificated staff, phone or make personal contact with parents, other teachers and agencies regarding student progress. 12. Under direction of certificated staff, maintain discipline in the classroom while supervising students during teacher’s prep period and lunch period. 13. May perform the following duties if working with handicapped children: work with wheelchairs and other equipment for physically handicapped students; change diapers; helps students in the bathroom and clean up bathroom accidents; serve lunches; load and unloads buses; put on and removes prosthesis. 14. Performs other related duties as assigned. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Correct English usage, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, punctuation and arithmetic; general classroom procedures and equipment; behavior modification and assertive discipline; methods and attitudes required in working with students who have special educational needs. Ability to assist with instructional activities in a classroom; learn the procedures, functions, limitations of assigned Special Education Assistant duties; understand the needs of severely handicapped students; remain calm in situations of stress; perform routine clerical duties; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with teachers, students and others contacted in the course of work; motivate children in participating and learning activities; recognize hazards to safety; learn laws, rules, practices and procedures related to the educational programs; and learn to operate office machines. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school, supplemented by training and/or experience working with children in a learning situation. Training and/or experience in working with handicapped children is desirable. WORKING CONDITIONS: Classroom environment; may be required to accompany students on field trips, must be able to lift and physically restrain students at times.
