TITLE:  Food Service Associate I                             

 

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision of the Director, Food Service is responsible for the preparing and serving food in a school cafeteria or base kitchen; cleans kitchen equipment and utensils according to required safety standards;  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Performs a variety of general service and production duties.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: working at a satellite cafeteria or central (base) kitchen helping to prepare food for serving line such as breakfast, lunch, sandwich, salad and “fun lunch” production; preparing fresh and canned fruit and vegetables, slicing meats and cheeses; sandwich and salad production; bake-off baking.
  • Takes monthly inventory and properly rotating inventory. 
  • Takes food storage temperatures and records on log sheets.
  • Serves meals to students and staff.
  • Monitors students’ choices of the required components for meals.
  • Maintains a safe work environment; including washing pots and pans, cleaning stoves, ovens, steam kettle, proof cabinets, racks, milk cooler, refrigerator etc. 
  • Keeps kitchen in a clean and tidy condition. 
  • Works in a safe manner and observes all sanitation procedures.
  • Breaks down boxes and takes to dumpster.
  • Abides by and carries out State and Federal regulations as they pertain to the National School Lunch Program. 
  • Participates in yearly training and skill upgrading forums as requested.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Learn and apply principles of portion control, sanitation and safety, time and motion, food preparation, nutrition, and methods of quality food preparation
  • Use and care of institutional kitchen equipment and utensils
  • Standards for safety and sanitation.
  • Basic mathematic and basic English
  • Learn and apply basic technology (i.e. email)
    •   Learn Breakfast and lunch program and procedures
  • Prepare nutritious foods with high standards of quality
  • Execute clerical procedures and directives in accordance with assigned duties and office policies
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Handle emergency situations efficiently, maintain composure, and apply reasonable and prudent judgment to fit the situation
    • Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing
    • Read, understand, interpret, and follow laws, rules, regulations, processes, policies, and methods of the office, the District, and the State of California
    • Work both independently and function effectively within a team setting Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Any combination of education equivalent to a high school diploma
  • Any combination of training and experience which has provided the applicant with the required knowledge and abilities to successfully perform job duties
  • Must obtain and maintain current ServSafe Food Handlers Certification within 30 days of employment

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a public education environment working with children

  • Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
  • Tolerance to heat, steam, water and common kitchen odors
