YouthBuild Charter School of California

Job Announcement

About our school: YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC) is a public school, chartered by the Inyo County Superintendent of Schools, dedicated to providing an effective alternative education for youth who have not succeeded in traditional school settings.  Students come to YCSC to earn a high school diploma and to develop a number of personal skills that will equip them for productive, fulfilling futures.  Our approach to education is competency-based; students are guided through a process that results in relevant demonstrations of learning through presentations and projects that demonstrate mastery of state standards.  Our instructional strategy is project-based and interdisciplinary, with authentic assessments designed by our teachers.

Students at YCSC are 16-24 year-old participants in one of several local YouthBuild programs in California.  Teachers at YCSC provide students with a classroom-based high school curriculum that values the culture and aspirations of youth while understanding the challenges that students face in under-resourced communities.  We are looking for a push-out to college and career coordinator who is creative, flexible, open to new approaches in education, and who truly cares about the post-secondary opportunities for youth who have not done well in traditional school settings.

Tutoring Program Contextual Framework: YCSC works with young people with high potential.  With a project-based approach, YCSC combats the impact of high stakes testing and school cultures that dehumanize and push-out students.

Recognizing the fact that many young people come to YCSC from high stakes testing schools that are dehumanizing, YCSC is committed to providing the student-centered academic and social emotional support students need to be successful in our school and beyond.

Tutoring Program Mission: The mission of the YCSC Tutoring program is centered around the provision of Individualized Support, Differentiation, Project Completion, Checks for Understanding, and Soft Skills-Development.  By providing all of the above elements, YCSC tutors are able to keep young people focused and on track with their college and career goals.

Specific Duties:

  • Provide individualized lesson objective support for a small number of students (no more than 20% of class) who struggle with any lesson objectives
  • Work with a small group of students during differentiated lessons
  • Work with individual students to support project completion at the end of a unit
  • Support classroom teacher with roving “checks for understanding” during lessons
  • Provide individualized support for soft-skills development as outlined in YCSC Competencies

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team of teachers and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and support the larger programmatic goals at a YouthBuild program.
  • Proven expertise in negotiating agreements among diverse interest groups.
  • Positive attitude and excellent ability to develop positive inter-personal relationships with staff and partners.
  • Excellent ability to understand and support the YCSC school-wide learning goals, strategies and priorities.
  • Excellent communication and follow-up skills.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills.
  • Ability to facilitate positive staff meetings for planning and coordination.
  • Ability to provide support and direction to staff, including corrective action plans.
  • Ability to broker cooperation and commitment to reach the mission and goals for student learning and success.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimum supervision and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making effective decisions and in problem solving.
  • Sincere desire to assist young people to succeed, develop self-confidence and become effective community leaders.
  • Deep understanding of the various challenges and issues faced by youth from under-resourced communities.
