About the Employer

Thomas Edison Charter Academy is a Transitional Kindergarten through Eighth-Grade elementary school serving more than 600 students. TECA is currently one of 18 charter schools operating within the city of San Francisco and has been authorized by the San Francisco Unified School District since 2010. TECA received its original authorization for a Kindergarten through Fifth-Grade Charter in 2001, and in 2004 expanded to include the Sixth Grade by a unanimous vote of the California State Board of Education, the previous authorizer of the TECA Charter (SBE). In 2005, TECA expanded with its Seventh-Grade class and became a Kindergarten through Eighth-Grade school in 2006. In 2011, TECA became its own independent non-profit, governed by its local board, as it remains today.

The Paraprofessional, as a member of the special education team, works under the supervision of the certified Inclusion Specialist. This person primarily works in inclusive settings, assisting the Inclusion Specialist in implementing special education and related services. Such assistance may include: providing instructional assistance, guiding additional practice opportunities, reteaching, and monitoring behavior. Requirements: -Meets NCLB requirements: -Completed two years of full-time study at an institution of higher education (48 semester hours in some states and 60 in others); or obtained an associates degree -He or she also must possess a high school diploma. -Meets appropriate age, diploma and certification requirements as defined by the state; -Be capable of physically assisting students with specials needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.)

Requirements: • AA Degree or higher or 48 college units and a high school diploma or successful completion of CBEST and a high school diploma • TB Test (with 6 months) • Live Scan (completed upon hiring)

Under supervision of a Special Education Coordinator, assists in the direct delivery of instruction in a classroom setting with students who have a non-severely impairing condition as determined by an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The primary objective is to affect learning for mastery by implementing both developmental and remedial methods in basic skill areas and content areas. Assist certificated staff by: • implementing lesson plans • reinforcing proper behavior management • participating in parent conferences • proctoring assessments • keeping relevant records • operating instructional equipment in appropriate instructional settings • performing related duties as required
