Comments and Other Information

Teaching in a progressive TK-8 public charter school requires much knowledge of child development. One must be able to adjust curriculum to the cognitive level of each child and provide a wide range of materials for the varying levels of student ability and attend to the state standards. To conference successfully with parents in such a school, one must have good communication skills and a thorough understanding of the curriculum and each student's circumstances. A familiarity with many ways of approaching a subject, and a willingness to develop one's own materials and to learn new ways, are very important. Other qualities needed are a good sense of humor and organization, flexibility, self-motivation, a positive attitude, and confidence. An OCS teacher needs to be a team player who exhibits a sense of stewardship in the work setting. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES Plan and implement a quality student-centered, standards-based, 7th and 8th grade math curriculum for the students enrolled in their classes. Provide an effective room environment, which reflects and facilitates the learning process and incorporates intrinsically motivating activities. Help students regulate their own behavior and develop problem-solving skills, while remaining respectful and interested in the child’s well being, at all times. Create opportunities for students to be involved in the democratic process, assemblies, and community service projects. Provide continual assessment of student progress and maintain records, while evaluating class performance and modifying the environment and/or curriculum to meet the changing needs of students. Develop and implement benchmark assessments based on the state content standards, fill out progress reports each semester and maintain an online grading system. Actively strive for continuous and open communication with parents through conferencing, written communication, and attendance at several school community events throughout the year. Be an active member of our Professional Learning Community: Attend weekly faculty meetings and participate actively in curricular issues in an ongoing exchange of information (regular CFG’s) and support fellow staff members.
