CHILD CARE AIDE


RANGE 24 DEFINITION

Under supervision, to supervise children at a children's center or preschool during play, rest and meals; to assist the teacher in the instructional programs; to do related work as required.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


Assists teachers in supervision and training of children; assists children in bathroom procedures; cleaning of clothes and bedding as needed; assists and supervises children at lunch and snack time, guiding them in table manners; supervises children during inside and outside play and arts and crafts; helps to perform necessary clerical tasks; operates a variety of audio-visual and office equipment; tells and/or reads stories and plays phonograph records; assists in teaching numbers, colors and names of familiar things; supervises children at nap time; carries out authorized emergency and safety procedures.


EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS


Education and Experience: Must have earned at least 6 college units in Child Development, Early Childhood Education or other related field with emphasis on elementary age children as delineated in a board approved college course list; have at least two years of experience in a school age enrichment program or child care setting.


Knowledge and Skills: Requires a basic knowledge of child guidance principles and practices. Knowledge of the areas of instruction being taught in the program. Strong communication skills to interact with students, teachers, parents and other faculty and staff. General knowledge of basic clerical and record keeping processes.
Abilities: Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and work tasks of the position. Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret teacher's instructions in order to assist in instruction of children. Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of children and to reach and motivate them. Requires the ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with behavior problems. Must be able to analyze situations accurately and adopt on effective course of action. Must be able to perform clerical and classroom support duties with minimum supervision.


Phvsical Abilities: Requires normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read numbers and words. Requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (greater than two hours), to lift light to heavy objects on an occasional basis (10-50 Ibs.) and to push or pull lightweight objects.
