Characteristics of Class
Under supervision of a teacher/administrator, assists in the direct delivery of instruction in a children’s center setting. The primary objective of such assistance is to affect learning for mastery by implementing both developmental and remedial methods in basic skill areas and content areas. The employee assists certificated staff by: implementing lesson plans (activities which include reviewing and correcting the work of pupils), participating in parent conferences, proctoring examinations, keeping relevant records, operating instructional equipment in appropriate instructional settings, as well as performing related duties as required.
Some positions may require conversational and written skills in a specific language(s) other than English related to the needs of the assignment. An ability to translate and adapt materials to and from English into that language(s) may also be required.
Some positions may require that the employee furnish a certificate of clearance from the Department of Motor Vehicles in order to meet District insurability.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Employee works with children’s center pupils under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher. Duties focus on implanting the core curriculum for the basic skill areas appropriate to the child development program.
Minimum Requirements
A high school diploma or its equivalent
Six Units of Early Childhood Education
Pass a medical examination and Immunizations
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Utilizes knowledge appropriate to satisfy the Distinguishing Characteristics of the class listed above, examples of which may include familiarity with teaching methods, instructional media, test scoring, school organization, and school rules and regulations. Demonstrates competency in performing the following tasks; working with pupils, acting quickly and effectively in emergencies, working with and relating to all individuals within the culturally diverse environment of SFUSD, and developing and maintaining effective, courteous communications with pupils, staff and public.
Examples of Duties: C10
1. Assists teachers or other certificated employees in the performance of the following
duties: reads to children; directs and participates in children’s games and other
activities; assists children in meeting their physical needs and, in using learning
materials and equipment; and, assists children in developing positive attitudes, habits, knowledge, and skills.
2. Collects, distributes, stores or disposes of materials, and assists in the arrangement of furniture and equipment.
3. Monitors or checks assigned areas, including play areas, to assist in enforcing
appropriate standards of behavior and applicable safety rules.
4. Post information or records, files job related records, and performs other
miscellaneous duties. Prepares instructional, display, and other work materials as
required. Accompanies children on field trips.
5. Supervises meal times while eating with children.
6. Assists in preparation and distribution of snacks and meals.
7. Assists in supervision of lavatories.
8. Performs related duties as required.

Seeking candidates with experience;candidates fluent in Cantonese and Spanish are desirable; proficiency required in both languages; must be available to work for a minimum of two days per week especially on Mondays and Fridays.
