About the Employer

Welcome to Eureka City Schools: A Place to Learn, Lead, and Grow Thank you for your interest in becoming part of Eureka City Schools (ECS)—a district where every learner, every day is engaged, empowered, and future-ready. We are at an exciting crossroads, moving boldly toward a future where competency-based education replaces one-size-fits-all learning. Here, progress is measured by mastery and meaningful growth, not seat time. We're building environments where every learner—students and staff alike—can flourish with personalized support, innovation, and purpose. Who We Are: Our Mission and Core Values At ECS, we are driven by a shared mission: Every Learner, Every Day: Engaged, Empowered, and Future-Ready. Our work is grounded in the following core values: Accountability – We act with integrity and follow through on our commitments. Empathy – We listen with compassion and foster understanding. Communication – We prioritize open, respectful, and honest dialogue. Innovation – We seek creative solutions to improve learning and engagement. Resilience – We approach challenges with grit and a growth mindset. Guiding Principles for Learning We believe that: Learning is learner-centered and personalized. Belonging fosters growth—students learn best when they feel safe and seen. Equity means access—all learners deserve support tailored to their needs. Growth comes through effort, not perfection. Relevance drives engagement—learning should be joyful, authentic, and connected to life. This commitment doesn’t stop with students. We extend these beliefs to every employee, creating a workplace where innovation, development, and excellence are supported every step of the way. Equity and Inclusion at the Core Eureka City Schools is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We believe that a diverse staff helps all learners thrive. Discrimination in any form—based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, disability, or any protected category—is not tolerated. Our policies are guided by Title IX, Section 504, and other civil rights protections.

Job Summary

Job Summary

Eureka City Schools seeks an experienced leader to serve as Assistant Superintendent of Business Services, a Cabinet-level role overseeing financial and operational systems for a TK–12 district of about 3,500 students and 600 staff. This position suits a practical leader familiar with regional and rural communities, where resources are limited, decisions are highly visible, and operational choices directly impact student outcomes. Business Services is central to district success, influencing staffing, facilities, transportation, and overall priorities. The role requires both strategic financial planning and hands-on operational leadership. As chief business official, responsibilities include fiscal services, budget development, and multi-year financial planning; accounting, auditing, and reporting; facilities and capital planning; transportation and nutrition services; and risk management, compliance, and operational systems. The role also serves as a key advisor to the Superintendent and Board, translating complex financial information into clear guidance. The district maintains financial stability while addressing long-term challenges such as rising costs and aging facilities. Leaders must set priorities, ensure follow-through, and communicate effectively with internal teams and stakeholders. Ideal candidates have experience as a Chief Business Official or senior leader in California public schools, with expertise in school finance, including LCFF, and strong skills in budgeting, system improvement, and board collaboration. Success requires clarity, accountability, consistency, and the ability to adapt within a smaller district environment. This role offers significant influence, direct impact, and close collaboration with leadership. Salary ranges from $166,980 to $191,400, with full benefits, retirement plans, paid leave, and professional development support.
