San Diego County Office of Education TEACHER ASSISTANT Juvenile Court and Community Schools DEFINITION Under the immediate supervision of a classroom teacher or school administrator, provides clerical and tutorial assistance to the instructional program in an assigned classroom at a Juvenile Court and Community Schools program. TYPICAL TASKS · Orients and provides instructional assistance to individuals or small groups of students. · Tutors individuals and small groups of students in various subject areas. · Observes and controls behavior of students according to approved procedures; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior. · Administers tests to students and posts test results; scores papers and posts scores to student records. · Assists teacher in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe and pleasant classroom and learning environment. · Assists in preparing instructional materials. · Delivers teaching materials and supplies to classrooms.· Assembles, sets up and installs new equipment. · Sets up bulletin board and other classroom displays. · Assists in maintaining student records and files; takes attendance. · Operates equipment such as copy machines, computers and audiovisual equipment. · Performs related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Two years or 48 semester units of study in a college/university; or Associates degree or higher; or successful completion of an assessment test, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills and the ability to assist with instruction is required as stated in the No Child Left Behind Act. Concurrent enrollment in a minimum of six (6) semester units or nine (9) quarter hours of college credit at an institution accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Verification of Enrollment (Form TA140) must be submitted prior to start of employment and submitted each year. Experience Some experience working with students is desirable.

Enjoy working with children in an outdoor setting? Get experience leading small and large groups of students, grades K-3 or 4-6, as a Teacher/Program Assistant for a traveling science classroom. The San Diego County Office of Education helps connect students to nature through four school-site outreach programs that serve as an on-campus field trip. Splash Science Mobile Lab is a completely self-contained mobile science laboratory offering students the opportunity to learn about watershed issues by acting as scientists to solve a water-quality mystery. Since 1998, Green Machine has been providing interactive lessons to help students understand where food comes from and why a healthy environment is important to good nutrition - a standards-based field trip that comes to your school, Green Machine is a unique teaching model guiding students through three experiential "seed-to-table" learning stations that reinforce classroom learning. Created with the insight and help of the San Diego Farm Bureau, students learn about healthier food choices, get a greater understanding of natural systems and use scientific concepts in a real-world situation. Several part-time positions are available: MWF 7 - 4 PM and T/TH 7 - 4 PM.

All Teacher Assistants must be currently enrolled in school and carrying at least six semester units or the equivalent. All Teacher Assistants must meet ESSA requirements before being placed in a classroom. The requirement may be met in one of the following ways: 1) 48 semester units of study in a college/university; 2) Associates degree or higher; or 3) successful completion of the SDCOE TA exam, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills and the ability to assist with instruction.
